How to cook pearl barley porridge in water on the stove

It is not recommended to cook pearl barley in water without soaking, otherwise it will take a very long time. The cereal must first be soaked in water and then the cooking process will be halved.

First of all, measure out the required amount of cereal and sort it out, since even in the best factory packaging you may encounter small pebbles and debris.

Then pour it into a fine-hole colander or sieve and rinse thoroughly under cool running water. During the rinsing process, constantly sort the grains with your fingers. Next, place the washed pearl barley in a container of a suitable size and also fill it with cool water.

Leave the pearl barley in the water for at least 5 hours, ideally overnight. During this time, the cereal should increase significantly in size. After soaking, place it in a colander (sieve) again and rinse thoroughly. Now the clean and swollen pearl barley is ready for cooking.

Bring the water in a saucepan to a boil and add the cereal.

The proportions of water and cereal depend on the viscosity of the porridge you want to obtain as a result. For example, how much water do you need for a glass of pearl barley? For crumbly porridge, take 2.5 glasses of water; for porridge of medium viscosity - the ratio will be 1:3; for a very viscous messy porridge (many people remember it from kindergarten) - from 3.5 glasses to a liter of water.

Cover the saucepan with the pearl barley tightly and place it on the burner set to maximum heat. As soon as the contents of the pan begin to gurgle intensely, turn the stove to low heat and, without removing the lid, let the barley boil for about 25 minutes.

When the specified time has passed, lift the lid: from above the porridge seems completely ready, the top of the cereal has already completely absorbed the water, but there is still a little liquid left at the very bottom. Salt the porridge to your taste (usually 1 teaspoon is enough), stir gently and return the lid to its place.

Simmer the porridge on low heat on the stove for another 10 minutes, then turn off the burner, but do not remove the saucepan from it yet, let it steam for 5-7 minutes, and the pearl barley porridge on the water will be ready!

It is better to serve pearl barley hot or warm. Season it with butter, perhaps also with a handful of herbs. Or serve the porridge as a side dish with meat (fish, mushroom) sauce and vegetables in any form.

The porridge will turn out especially tasty, and the grains will remain intact if you first lightly fry the cereal in a dry frying pan.

  1. Place the pearl barley in a colander and scald with boiling water after pre-rinsing. Soak the cereal in water at room temperature for 4 hours. Next, strain the liquid, fill the grains with new water (420 ml.).
  2. Place the pan on the stove, set the power to medium and bring to a boil. Cook for about 5 minutes, then drain the porridge in a colander and rinse well.
  3. Select a container that can withstand microwave heating. Move the pearl barley into it and fill it with water again. The liquid should rise 1.5 times above the grains.
  4. Salt the porridge, cover with a lid, and place in the microwave. Turn on the device to maximum power, set the timer for 6 minutes.
  5. After 2 minutes, reduce the power exactly 2 times. Take out the pearl barley, stir and let it simmer again. Cook for 25-35 minutes, periodically pause the microwave and stir the mixture.
  6. When the specified time has passed, evaluate the taste of the porridge. If the grains are hard and raw, add a little boiling water and simmer the dish for another 5-7 minutes until done.
  7. After all the manipulations, add the oil, mix until smooth, leave to “simmer” under the lid for 15-20 minutes. It is advisable to wrap the heat-resistant dishes with a warm blanket.

Cooking pearl barley in the oven

  • pearl barley - 265 gr.
  • drinking water - 800 ml.
  • butter - 25-30 gr.
  1. Rinse the pearl barley and soak it in filtered water overnight. After waking up in the morning, drain the used liquid and prepare clay pots for porridge.
  2. Pack the cereal into them, pour boiling water over them so that the water rises 3-4 cm above the grains. Do not cover the pots, preheat the oven to a temperature of 210-220 degrees, place the dishes inside.
  3. After 10 minutes, reduce the power to 200 degrees, simmer the cereal for 45 minutes. Next, remove the finished dish, provide it with butter, granulated sugar (optional), and salt.
  4. You can cover the dish with a lid and let the pearl barley brew for about half an hour. During this time it will cool down, become juicy and creamy. Oatmeal and flaxseed porridge are prepared in the same way.

  • pearl barley - 245 gr.
  • drinking water - 740 ml.
  • butter - 45 gr.
  • salt - 20 gr.
  1. If you don't have a steamer, you can use a rice cooker. The technical characteristics of the listed household appliances are almost identical, so the end result will not change.
  2. First, clean the pearl barley from the whitish coating by rinsing it under the tap. Place the grains in a colander and allow excess liquid to drain. After this, fill the cereal with water, cover with a lid and leave for 3 hours to soak.
  3. Drain the liquid, place the barley in a steamer, fill with water in a ratio of 1:3. Cover with a lid and turn on the “Cooking” or “Porridge” function. Cooking time is 1 hour.
  4. If you do without soaking, cooking will take about 2 hours. After turning off the timer, do not rush to open the lid, wait half an hour. Next, season the porridge with oil, salt, and start tasting.

Cooking pearl barley in a slow cooker

  • filtered water - 750 ml.
  • pearl barley - 250 ml.
  1. As with all other cooking methods, barley must first be washed. When the whitish liquid drains, pour water over the grains and leave to soak for 3 hours. If you don’t have a lot of time, pour boiling water over the cereal and let it sit for about a quarter of an hour.
  2. When the pearl barley gets wet, drain the water and place the mixture in the slow cooker. Fill with filtered liquid in a ratio of 1:3. It is advisable to first grease the cavity of the bowl with butter so that the porridge does not burn.
  3. Close the lid and set the function to “Buckwheat”, “Porridge” or “Cooking”. If you have an automatic multicooker with available modes, the time will be selected independently. Otherwise, turn on the device for 1-1.5 hours.
  4. After turning off the timer, salt the pearl barley porridge, add butter and sugar (if you like). Stir the dish, cover and let sit for 20 minutes.

Pearl barley is valued for its taste and high content of beneficial enzymes, which have a beneficial effect on the activity of all internal organs. Consider recipes for cooking cereals in a steamer, oven, slow cooker, rice cooker or on the stove. If this is not possible, soak the grains in boiling water in a thermos. Add salt, butter and other ingredients to taste. Before cooking, read the manufacturer's recommendations on the back of the package.
