How to drink rum and cola correctly? Is it worth doing this at all? Use with ice. How to make a Cuban cocktail

During the existence of the “green friend”, more than one way of drinking it has appeared. Each country and each tradition has left its mark on this.

Method 1. “Crystal”.

This method came from the Czech Republic; it is considered both the simplest and the most classic. For this you will need a thick-walled glass made of heat-resistant glass. You need to pour our alcohol into it and light it. After waiting a little, they blow it out and drink it in one gulp. In this case, you are not supposed to drink or have a snack.

Method 2. “French”.

To brighten up the bitterness of the drink a little, the French came up with the idea of mixing absinthe and finely crushed ice. But later they improved this method. So, we need to prepare absinthe and very cold water in a ratio of 1 to 3 (3 parts water), a special spoon (absinthe), and one piece of lump sugar. Pour alcohol into a large glass, place a spoon on top, and a piece of refined cane sugar on it. Slowly pour water over the sugar until it dissolves and mixes with the alcohol.

Method 3. “Czech”

The first is to place a spoon with refined sugar on the edge of an empty glass, and slowly pour alcohol onto it. After this, the sugar is set on fire and the drops of caramel fall into the alcohol. Cold water is added to the resulting “potion”. The proportion of absinthe and water in this recipe is similar to the previous one - 1:3.

The second variation involves heating the spoon itself. Sugar is placed on it and alcohol is poured on top. True, in this case it is most often not diluted with water. And one more thing - the drink turns out warm, which, so to speak, is not for everyone.

Method 4. “Russian”

The Russian people have always been distinguished by the ability not to do difficult things that can be done simply. But with maximum pleasure. In this case, the sugar cube is dissolved separately in water and the syrup is poured into the absinthe. The proportion is standard: absinthe 1 part, water - 3. After this, the mixture is set on fire in a glass and after a couple of moments it is covered with another glass. The fire stops burning. Now the glasses are manipulated: absinthe from the 1st is poured into the 2nd, drunk, and the 1st glass is covered with a piece of linen or a napkin and, turning it over, a deep breath of alcoholic vapor is taken through a straw slipped under the bottom. All these manipulations are performed very quickly, and sometimes their order is changed: they inhale the vapors, then drink the liquid.

Method 5. “Severe”

There are several harsh ways of drinking, each country has its own. Let's start with the classics. Pour absinthe (4 parts) into a heat-resistant thick-walled glass. It should be downright icy. Place a spoon with a sugar cube on top. Raising it above the glass, set the absinthe on fire and begin to heat the spoon with fire. The sugar melts and drips to the bottom. When the 5th part of the glass is filled, the fire is extinguished, and the contents of the glass are drunk through a straw, taking 2-3 large sips. It is worth saying that the total amount of contents of the glass should not exceed 50 grams, but it all depends on your determination. Just remember the limit - no more than 300 ml at a time. A large dose can significantly harm your health.

Method 6. “Parachute”

A very complex, but quite interesting method. For this, you need to prepare in advance a wine glass for cognac and a glass for whiskey, a straw for “smoking” the vapors, a saucer for sugar and a partner for help.

So, pour 40 grams of absinthe into the bottom of the glass, and juice or Sprite (50 grams) into the bottom of the glass. We place the wine glass so that one side of it rests on the edge of the container with juice, light the alcohol and rotate it so that the glass does not crack. At the same time, we gradually pour the absinthe into the juice and, with the last drop, cover it with a glass. The flame goes out, releasing a mass of absinthe vapor, which must be “smoked” with a straw through a small gap between the containers.

While one of the friends is busy smoking, the other lights up sugar. It is also prepared in advance: 2 pieces are placed on a saucer (one on top of the other) and poured over with absinthe to form a small meadow around.

After “smoking” the vapor, remove the glass and drink the drink in one sip (if it contains juice) or before taking a sip, cover the glass and shake it sharply (if it contains sprite), and after the “boom” you swallow.

After drinking the contents of the glass, cover the burning sugar with a wine glass and, inserting a straw, inhale the vapors again.

They say that after this you feel euphoria and some slowness.

Method 7. “Shilovsky”

This option is also called Ryazan severe. He's really tough. Pour absinthe into a 50 ml glass. Place a regular teaspoon with a sugar cube on top. Dipping sugar into alcohol sets it on fire. As soon as the melting begins, the piece is stewed and chewed (without swallowing right away). The contents of the glass are drunk immediately.

Method 8. “Severe Czech”

This method is less severe than the one described earlier, but is nevertheless considered as such. Place an absinthe spoon with a cube of refined sugar on it on the edge of a large glass. From a narrow glass with a volume of 50 ml, add absinthe to the sugar and light it. When the fire goes out, a little alcohol is poured from above in a thin stream, washing away the sugar. Then the process is repeated: set it on fire and wash it until the sugar in the drink is completely dissolved. You need to drink this “potion” slowly, taking small sips.

Method 9. “Citrus”

You will need tongs and an orange slice, which you need to leave with the peel, but get rid of the films. Roll it in granulated sugar and cinnamon. Pour 50 grams of alcohol into a heat-resistant thick-walled glass and light it. We take the orange with tongs and hold it over the burning drink, squeezing it slightly until the juice, sugar crystals and cinnamon melt and fall into the glass. Having finished this, turn off the fire and drink the resulting liquid. In this case, you can use a mixture of cinnamon and burnt sugar as a snack.

Method 10. “Tarragon”

In this version, we pour sugar into a glass of absinthe (50 ml), and, having lit the surface, stir with a long spoon. If there is too much sugar, then at a certain point it will stop dissolving. Stew the drink and pour it into another glass and drink it immediately. The liquid will taste like tarragon and is easy to drink, but you should not drink more than 5 servings of this mixture.

Method 11. “Toad”

The method is tricky, but interesting. You will need to prepare mint liqueur (15 grams), champagne (100 grams), vodka (30 ml), absinthe (30 ml) and two containers: a rocks glass and a snifter glass for cognac. We will pour liqueur, champagne and vodka into the bottom of the first one, and absinthe into the last one, which is lit and rotated in a glass as standard.

When the fire burns slightly, absinthe is poured (without putting it out) into a glass with a mixture of alcohol and our glass is lowered into it on top so that it slightly enters the drink. This reaction will cause bubbles to form in the drink. When they stop inflating, place the glass upside down on a napkin and shake the glass with a sharp, energetic movement (sort of like a “boom”). You need to drink in one gulp and, raising the glass a little, inhale the vapor.

Method 12. “The Cheerful Milkman”

The recipe is quick and unexpected. We take equal parts of absinthe, whiskey and milk, mix and sip slowly, if possible - with pleasure.

Method 13. “Gentle”

A 50 ml glass is filled in layers. First a layer of ice water (1/3 of the container), then absinthe (2/3 of the container). In this case, alcohol should not mix with water. You need to drink in one gulp.

Method 14. “Colorful”

To make it turn out as expected, prepare in advance a glass, a glass, champagne (250 ml), grenadine (5 grams) and absinthe (45 grams). The glass should contain champagne, the glass should contain a mixture of grenadine and absinthe. Light the contents of the glass and carefully lower it (without pouring) into the champagne. The liquid will first become bright cherry, then eggplant. After this, stir everything with a straw and drink the mixture through it.

Method 15. “Cheshire cat”

We lower ice into a large glass (by ¼), pour absinthe on top (by another ¼), and when the ice begins to melt slightly - cold apple juice (by 2/4). You can start tasting.

It is worth saying that there is no need to be alarmed by the reaction of absinthe to water in recipes. The fact that it becomes cloudy at the same time is normal. As another nuance, let’s add about sugar, which often appears in recipes. It would be best to use reed.

Of course, all the described methods of drinking absinthe are far from the limit of human imagination, but we have described to you the recipes for the most interesting ones. And if all this is too difficult for you, then you can simply cool 30 grams of absinthe and drink it in one gulp.

What to eat with absinthe

It is believed that if you do not drink this alcohol in its pure form, then you should not have a snack at all. But not everyone agrees with this. Perhaps, due to tradition, we are accustomed to snacking on strong alcohol. But standard snacks “a la jellied meat” would be inappropriate here.

So, if you really can’t do without snacks, try the following options:

  • blue cheese
  • green olives
  • chocolate
  • lollipops
  • slices of green apple, pear or grape

The best in this sense is considered to be sugar with cinnamon, lime or lemon (to taste) and ice water, but remember: no juices or lemonades are allowed!

Alcoholic cocktails, including Rum-Cola, are works of art in their own way. Their purpose is to create positive impressions and a cheerful mood. No wonder they can be found in any nightclub or beach party, where it is essential to set a positive mood. The profession of a bartender is one of the most in demand during the summer season, since during this period the largest number of both alcoholic and ordinary cocktails is consumed. One of the most popular, as global research shows, is the Rum-Cola cocktail.

1 History of the origin and rules for serving the Rum-Cola cocktail

Each of us has heard about rum and cola. The shelves of modern supermarkets are full of various variations and modifications of this cocktail. Various manufacturers contribute something of their own to the production of this drink, sometimes significantly modifying it. Some of them add spices to their products, others experiment with soda, while others replace traditional rum with completely different alcoholic drinks. However, none of these solutions even come close to the original recipe, which appeared more than 100 years ago.

A traditional cocktail made with rum and Coca-Cola is called Cuba Libre. He received it during the war for Cuban independence from Spanish oppression. It is not for nothing that this phrase, literally translated, means “Free Cuba” and is part of the slogan uttered by local soldiers in those distant times. The story goes that Cuba Libre was first ordered at a local bar by a certain American military man, who asked to combine local Cuban rum and the traditional drink of his country, which is Coca-Cola, in one glass. It was under such conditions that the same cocktail was born, which later became one of the most popular drinks all over the world.

Cocktail Free Cuba

  • Cubalibre – Liberty Island cocktail
  • Cocktails with dark rum – long drinks and shots
  • Vodka Martini Cocktail – Stir but do not shake

How to drink rum and cola separately from each other - there are no special rules here. But serving the cocktail has its own characteristics. It is produced in a special highball container with a volume of 250-270 ml, shaped like a thick-walled glass glass. The use of other utensils is considered absolutely unacceptable.

Today, this cocktail is offered at any party, bar or cafe. Part of this fairly wide distribution is due to the availability of basic ingredients, which can be found in any supermarket or local store near your home. However, the main criterion that made it possible to conquer the world community is the taste of this drink and the effect it produces. The feeling of freshness that fills every sip of the Cuba Libre cocktail allows you not only to quench your thirst on a hot summer day, but also to significantly lift your mood and set yourself in a positive mood.

2 Main components of the original Cuba Libre cocktail recipe

Various modifications of the Cuba Libre cocktail are available in all sources of information we receive. Printed and electronic publications, television programs and radio broadcasts - they all provide us with a lot of tips and solutions to recreate some semblance of this magnificent drink. Today you can simply go to the Internet and download from there various recipes for preparing “Cuba Libre”. However, it is worth recalling that only a small part of them relates to the original drink. The rest are just its pale shadow, displaying modified combinations and a set of components. Let's reproduce the original recipe for making this cocktail, which in our latitudes received a name more familiar to our ears - “Rum Cola”. To recreate it, we need the following set of ingredients, which were the basis of the traditional drink more than 100 years ago:

  • rum - 50 ml;
  • Coca-Cola - 120 ml;
  • lime juice - 10 ml;
  • ice - 5 cubes.

Mix Rum Cola

The set of components and their mixing proportions are simple, and the products themselves can be purchased in the store. This accessibility allows you to prepare this cocktail for any suitable occasion. And in the summer heat it is simply irreplaceable.

3 Preparing the Rum-Cola cocktail: choosing ingredients

The first step in preparing this cocktail is preparing the glass. Not everyone has a highball glass in their home, so we’ll use an ordinary tall glass goblet. First pour 50 ml of white rum into it. Some may have a completely fair question: is it possible to replace light rum with another variety? It is, of course, possible to make such a forgery, but as a result of falsification, the very original taste for which the traditional Cuba Libre cocktail is so famous will be lost. This is due to the fact that white rum has a rather specific mild taste, which gives the finished drink a special piquancy and charm. The use of black or golden rum significantly diversifies the final taste characteristics of the product, since these drinks have a pronounced aftertaste that is absolutely incompatible with the other components. Therefore, we will take white rum, which is the main ingredient in our recipe.

The next component is soda. Some argue that rum and Pepsi-Cola harmonize most successfully. However, it should be taken into account that this drink has a completely different taste than traditional Coca-Cola. It is sweeter and less carbonated, giving it a different consistency. The use of other varieties of soda is also not suitable for creating Cuba Libre, since it disrupts the chain of basic taste and aromatic qualities of the finished drink. Coca-Cola, in turn, creates the necessary balance of components and gives it optimal final characteristics.

4 The final stages of preparing the Cuba Libre cocktail and the rules for its use

Particular attention must be paid to the lime, since it is as essential to this recipe as the other ingredients.

Lime for cocktail with rum

Some people prefer to replace this citrus fruit with lemon. However, this approach is fundamentally wrong, since lemon has slightly different taste qualities than lime. It is softer and adds only some sourness to the drink, while traditional lime has a completely different aroma. Due to its structure and the presence of essential oils in a certain dosage, lime gives the finished cocktail a spicy and bright taste, in addition, creates unique aromatic combinations in it.

How to drink Rum Cola? The Cuba Libre cocktail is almost ready, there are only a few touches left until the final preparation of the drink is completed. Lastly, add ice, divided into cubes. This step will significantly lower the temperature of the drink and give it a completed appearance, as well as create the final range of flavors. Once the ice cubes are placed in the glass with the remaining ingredients, the Rum-Cola cocktail is completely ready and should be drunk as soon as possible before its temperature rises again.

The Rum Cola cocktail appeared more than 100 years ago, and in the time since its creation, it has gained immense popularity throughout the world. Its refreshing and aromatic characteristics have brought enormous fame to this drink, making it one of the most widely used in modern culture. The main components of this cocktail will not be difficult to find in any supermarket. At the same time, a Cuba Libre cocktail created independently will be significantly different from analogues produced by large corporations and will significantly surpass them in aroma. You will be able to experience exactly the taste that has captivated millions of people around the world and enjoy it to the fullest.

Each drink has its own drinking culture, and when considering the Rum drink, you need to pay attention to several points: how to drink correctly, from what glasses and what to eat. At one time, rum gained popularity due to pirates, but few people know that they loved this drink because it was the only one that could burn in the rain.

The strength of rum varies from 35 to 70 percent, so we do not advise you to abuse it, as this can lead to alcoholism.

The editors of Moonshine - Man magazine have collected for you the most accurate and interesting information about what to drink rum with, how to mix drinks and the best snacks. This will save you time searching for the answer to your question.

Rum - what to drink with and what to snack on

  • Often those who, from their own experience, begin researching noble alcoholic drinks, wonder what and how to drink rum correctly.
  • There is no strictly defined ritual in the use of this alcohol and, if you delve deeper into history, once upon a time the drink of sea pirates was drunk directly from the neck of the bottle, without washing it down or snacking on anything.
  • And yet, with the development of culture, the rules for the use of this noble alcohol have now been established.

Rum solo - how to drink it

Connoisseurs recommend drinking rum only in its pure form, without diluting or adding anything. This method is quite extreme and is not suitable for everyone, since alcohol has a high percentage of alcohol content. But the male part of the population still drinks alcohol in its pure form, without adding any liquid or additional ingredients to it.

It is customary to drink rum before meals to improve appetite or after meals as a digestif. In both cases, options for drinking alcohol in its pure form are possible.

It is customary to serve the white variety as an aperitif. In this case, alcohol is served in vodka glasses. Drink in one gulp, snacking on any meat dish. Drinking white rum in this way stimulates the appetite and puts those present in the right mood.

Rum glasses
  • To complete the meal, aged rums are served as a digestif. These include golden and dark varieties.
  • The ritual of tasting noble alcohol after finishing a meal is akin to the rules for drinking cognac. For this purpose, use tall, thick-walled glasses with a thick bottom.
  • The glasses are filled one third full with the coveted liquid. As in the case of cognac, the rum is warmed with the warmth of the palm, inhaling the aromas of the drink.
  • They drink noble alcohol in small sips, savoring every drop. True connoisseurs combine alcohol consumption with a cigar or a cup of freshly brewed coffee.

What can you drink rum with?

Despite the taste and aroma qualities of pure rum, most consumers drink it diluted. There are several ways to drink alcohol with additives:

  • One of the most famous and popular ways to drink the drink of sea pirates is rum with ice. Its beauty lies in the fact that the taste and aroma of rum is not interrupted by other ingredients, but is only slightly weakened. As the ice melts, the strength of the drink decreases, and drinking it becomes more enjoyable.
  • With drinks. Combining alcohol with various drinks is a whole science. Each country has its own decades-old traditions of drinking diluted rum. In America, for example, alcohol is diluted with cola and soda. Europeans prefer to drink alcohol with fruit juices. There are also differences in the additives used for different types of rum.

What do you drink white rum with? This unaged variety is best diluted with cola, lime or lemon juice, soda, or coconut milk. When diluting, the proportions are 1:1 or 1:2. The ratio of components depends on the taste of the consumer.

What can you drink aged rum with? It is customary to dilute golden and dark alcoholic drinks with freshly squeezed fruit juices. These include juice from orange, lemon, apple, pineapple and other fruit juices.

With all the variety of recommendations, the question of what is best to drink rum with is up to each drinker to decide for himself.

Cocktails with rum

  • There are many cocktails with rum and this is not surprising since it is the perfect ingredient. For this purpose, unseasoned species are most often used.
  • There are a lot of cocktail recipes with the addition of this type of alcohol. The most famous of them are “Mojito”, “Barbados Punch”, “Daiquiri”, “Pina Colada”. Cocktails with a rum base are classic low-alcohol drinks.
  • Alcohol “marries” very successfully with various components, bringing its own tastes and aromas to the final product. Not a single self-respecting establishment ignores this ancient drink, which has become an indicator of prestige and good taste.

Snack for rum

If low-alcohol drinks with a rum base do not require an additional snack, then after drinking the drink in its pure, undiluted form, you need to have a snack. Snack with rum maybe
the most diverse. Let's consider several options:

  • True gourmets of alcohol drink rum, as well as cognac, after a meal, and instead of a snack they use a cigar or coffee. When these components are combined, the taste and aroma of rum is most clearly expressed. For this ritual, it is best to use an aged dark or golden drink.
  • To confirm the title of the drink as sea pirates, you can serve a seafood salad as a snack for rum. Any kind of fish, shrimp, squid, caviar and other properly prepared sea creatures will make excellent company for your distant comrade on sea voyages. For a digestif, you can prepare these snacks in the form of canapés.
  • Connoisseurs of strong alcohol know that it is better to eat rum with meat. This drink of true men requires a man's snack. Low-fat fried meat or sausage would be appropriate for a snack of strong alcohol.
  • Those who like lighter snacks will enjoy greens and good varieties of cheese. It is better to serve them in the form of sandwiches.
  • Rum also goes well with fruit. Slices of apples, pineapple, lemon, orange, melon, sprinkled with cinnamon powder, highlight the taste of the drink very well. Dark varieties of the drink go best with these snacks.
  • A small amount of amber rum can be enjoyed with ice cream, chocolate or any dessert. Those with a sweet tooth will not be left indifferent by the combination of hot chocolate and noble alcohol.
  • If you still decide not to snack on this drink, then alcohol connoisseurs recommend eating a small piece of bread after each serving. This method of consumption will not spoil the taste and aroma of the drink, and at the same time will help you stay in shape.

How to wash it down with rum

How can you drink rum?

1. First of all, in pure, undiluted form. Two caveats must be made here. Firstly, this method of consumption is only suitable for high-quality and expensive varieties and brands. Secondly, it is the lot of true connoisseurs and gourmets of alcohol. If you get your hands on a bottle of really expensive rum, then you should pour it into tall tulip-shaped glasses.

Remember, this alcohol should not be cooled too much. Otherwise, it will not reveal to you all the facets of aroma and taste.

Light or white rum makes an excellent aperitif. That is, it is best served 15-20 minutes before meals. Pour the alcoholic drink into small glasses or glasses and drink, savoring, in small sips.

Rum as a digestif

If you bought a bottle of dark (black) or golden rum, then such a drink will be the best ending to any celebration. It is usually served as a digestif, that is, after a meal.

  • In this case, I recommend that you take glass glasses with a thick bottom. Fill them a quarter or a third with rum. Take your time to take your first sip.
  • Let the drink soak in the warmth of your hand. Take a few moments to inhale the bouquet. Only then take a small sip.
  • A good addition to rum in this case would be a cup of freshly brewed coffee. If you smoke, allow yourself to enjoy a cigarette or cigar. By the way, for those who don’t know, coffee with rum is a cult drink in many countries around the world.

Remember not to drink too much rum. After 120-150 ml you will simply stop feeling the flavor of this wonderful drink. In addition, do not forget about its strength. I consider 150 ml to be my optimal daily dose of rum.

If you are just going to get acquainted with this amazing alcoholic drink, then first buy some well-known brand. For example, Bacardi or Captain Morgan.

Use with ice

2. Rum can be drunk with ice. This method is not very popular among connoisseurs of strong alcohol. They believe, not without reason, that it deprives the drink of its real taste.

However, this method also has obvious advantages. Melting ice dilutes the alcohol and makes it less strong. In addition, it allows you to somewhat mask and level out the tart and peculiar taste of rum, which not everyone likes.

3. Rum can be diluted with another non-alcoholic drink. For these purposes, you can use fruit juices, for example, any citrus fruits. There is a whole culture that tells how to properly prepare rum and juice.

You can also use cola, soda and even milk for dilution. Any convenient glasses will do. You can choose the appropriate proportions yourself. They can be completely different. It is believed that the most popular ratio of rum and cola (juice) is 1:2. Only some people think that one part of alcohol is diluted with two parts of a soft drink, while others do exactly the opposite. By the way, making rum and cola is not as easy as it might seem at first glance.

Separately, I would like to offer you such a tasty and healthy recipe in the chilly autumn.

You will need ingredients:

  • milk – 170 ml;
  • any rum – 50 ml;
  • honey – 1 teaspoon;
  • a third of a cinnamon stick;
  • one bud of carnation;
  • one slice of fresh ginger root;
  • one pea of allspice.

Preparation.

  1. Place the spices in a Turk and pour milk over them. Place on the stove and bring to a boil. Then remove it immediately.
  2. Pour the drink into a cup through a fine strainer.
  3. Add rum and honey to the cup. Mix well. Serve and drink immediately.

4. Rum is drunk in cocktails. A great variety of them have been invented. The most popular are Pina Colada, Cuba Libre and Daiquiri. I have listed mixes that have long become bar classics. However, there are more unusual combinations. For example, what can you say about tea with rum?

Now you know exactly how and with what you drink rum.

The right snack

True rum connoisseurs will certainly prove to you that there is no need to snack on it. If you are used to drinking strong alcohol with food, then you have many options. I would like to bring to your attention three of the most delicious and suitable ones.

  1. 1. Citrus happiness. This snack suits two categories of people: lazy people and minimalists. Decide for yourself which one you belong to. One thing is for sure, this simple dish will perfectly complement and highlight the taste of rum. Wash the ripe orange. Cut it into slices and sprinkle them with cinnamon.
  2. 2. Flambé - this Cuban folk Caribbean snack is perfect for lovers of exotic foods. Take 2-3 bananas and peel them. Then cut into pieces 5-10 millimeters thick and place on a clean metal baking sheet. In a Turk, heat 40-50 ml of rum over the fire. Then light it and pour over the chopped bananas. In a few minutes the flambé will be ready.
  3. 3. Fish sandwiches with tuna. You remember that rum is the drink of real pirates. So you can eat it like a pirate, that is, with seafood.

Toast slices of white bread in a toaster or oven. Grease them with butter. Then place a thin slice of pickled cucumber and lemon on top. Place pieces of canned tuna on them. All lovers of beauty can additionally decorate their sandwiches with herbs. Be sure to declare a toast, this will add seriousness to the event!

In addition, seafood, fish and meat dishes, cheeses, fruits and nuts go well with rum as a snack.

Light rum

As one of the elements of the cocktail, as a rule, light rum of medium and high quality is used. The most famous drink with a rum base is the Barbados Punch, as well as the beloved Mojito. At the same time, these are completely different liquids that cannot resemble the taste of true rum.

Another quite popular method is mixing rum with other non-alcoholic drinks. First of all, fruit juices are used for this purpose. For example, orange, lemon or apple juice.

Often, rum is diluted in a ratio of one to two (where there is twice as much juice) and one to one. Rum is also diluted with alcoholic drinks. For example, vermouth or liqueurs are often added to it. As for the proportion, it is the same as in the case of juice.

Famous brands of rum

It should be noted that the most popular brand in this area is . We can recognize it by the emblem with a bat, which acts as a decorative element in several dozen different varieties of this alcoholic masterpiece.

  • This company was created on February 4, 1862, and since that time their products have been sold with tremendous success in 170 countries on the planet.

  • I would like to pay special attention to how Bacardi should be consumed in its light and dark versions.
  • White, or as it is also called silver, is a drink that has practically no pronounced taste.
  • At the same time, we can find the sweetness characteristic of rum. This is one of the varieties of this elixir, which is not usually consumed in its pure form.

As a rule, this type of rum is used as the basis for a fairly large number of different cocktails. Before consumption, it is often diluted with juice, nectar, carbonated drinks or fruit syrup.

It is considered the most popular not only for cocktails, but also for cooking. It is very pleasant to eat it cold, with ice. They also drink it hot.

What to drink rum with - review of drinks and dishes

Thanks to its connection with pirates, rum has become one of the most recognizable alcoholic drinks in the world. But over many years, a unified culture of its use has not been developed. There are many opinions about the most suitable snack for rum and its combination with other drinks. I propose to consider this problem based on our national traditions.

Rum is usually served in thick-walled glasses with ice. It can be drunk in the following ways:

No snacks.

This method is suitable for true connoisseurs and requires a high quality drink. If you decide to try the taste of real rum, I advise you to buy gold (amber) or dark types. They have a pronounced aroma and taste.

  • The brand of the drink must be well-known; this is a guarantee of high quality. Brands such as Bacardi, Captain Morgan and Havana Club are perfect.
  • Remember that the strength of rum is from 35 to 70 degrees, so drinking it in large quantities without a snack is not recommended. In order not to spoil the taste, you can eat the rum with a piece of bread after each sip.

Since rum is considered a seafood drink, the best appetizer to go with it would be seafood. You can serve any fish (except herring), caviar and shrimp. All types of rum (white, gold and dark) go well with meat dishes, such as lean roasted meats and sausages. You can also make sandwiches with cheese and herbs. First courses with rum are very rare.

Dark rum can be enjoyed with fruit - pineapples, oranges, lemons, melons or apples. It goes well with smoking cigars.

Lime is a good snack for golden rum

Cognac lovers prefer to drink rum with sweet snacks: chocolate, cakes and candies. In this case, I recommend buying golden varieties of rum; they go well with sweets.

In cocktails.

Light rum of medium and high quality is used. The most famous rum-based cocktails are the Mojito and the Barbados Punch. But these are completely different drinks that can only vaguely resemble the real taste of rum.

Mixing with other drinks.

First of all, these are juices, for example, lemon, orange and apple. Rum is usually diluted with juices in a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 (one part rum to two parts juice). From alcoholic drinks, liqueurs and vermouths are added to rum in the same proportions as juices

It is better to dilute white rums with other drinks, since they have a mild taste, their main advantage is their high strength.

In North America, it is common to drink rum and cola or coffee. The result is very original combinations that everyone should try. Sometimes rum is also diluted with hot chocolate, but the end result is a very sweet drink that not everyone likes.

What do you drink rum with, how to choose the best method depending on the color of the drink

  • Rum is a drink that gained its fame due to its association with pirates. Mysterious and shrouded in vicious secrets, it has gained popularity on all continents.
  • Despite this, a unified culture of drinking rum has not developed. Sometimes the question of what people drink rum with is directly related to the color of the drink. White rum is called rum with virtually no aging; most often, it is used as a cocktail filler.
  • Amber rum has a fuller hue and a bright taste with notes of caramel and vanilla. It is not diluted before use, but is sufficiently refrigerated.
  • Dark rum has a distinct color and is often used for culinary purposes. Black rum is used as an ingredient in cocktails or undiluted.

How to drink rum correctly

Regardless of the brand of the drink, rum is offered in thick glass glasses with added ice. Most often, one of the ways to use it is chosen:

No snack

  • A method for true connoisseurs of a strong drink that requires high-quality rum. To do this, you should choose amber or dark species that have an expressive bouquet and a thick aroma.
  • Well-known brands guarantee high quality rum, for example Bacardi, Captain Morgan, Havana Club. It should be remembered that the strength of the drink ranges from 35-70 percent, so it is not recommended to consume it in significant quantities.
  • You can snack on the rum with a small piece of bread so as not to disturb the aftertaste effect.

Not diluted

  • The method most preferred by men. True experts say that in this way the taste of the drink is revealed as deeply as possible.
  • Before meals, alcohol is consumed as an aperitif from small vodka-like glasses and eaten with meat products. After eating, rum is drunk like cognac: from thick glasses, savoring, inhaling the aroma and slowly sipping.
  • In these cases, you need to limit yourself to 100-150 grams, after which the taste is already lost and the aroma is not perceived. A significant amount of alcohol consumed will result in a severe hangover the next morning.

Since rum is considered the drink of sea wolves, the preferred dishes to accompany it would be any type of fish, shrimp and tartlets with caviar. Each type of rum goes well with lean meats and sausages. Sandwiches with cheese, decorated with herbs, are also acceptable. Cognac lovers choose sweets to accompany rum as a snack; amber varieties of rum are ideal for this.

In cocktails

The rum chosen is most often of medium quality. Of course, cocktails very roughly resemble the taste of an undiluted drink. The most popular cocktails with a rum base are the Barbados Punch and Mojito.

I'll give you my favorite way. Ice slightly extinguishes the bitter note of rum, so its taste becomes less tart. This is precisely why men do not like this method of drinking the drink. They believe that the individuality of the drink suffers, the aroma and flavor bouquet are lost.

Diluted

  • Most often, rum is drunk with water or juice (concentrates from packets are not suitable for dilution). It’s great if it’s lemon juice or coconut milk.
  • There are also inherent requirements for the quality of water - it must be purified and, of course, cooled. The American custom of mixing alcohol, in particular rum and cola, is also popular.
  • Sometimes ice is also added to such a mixture, which is actively opposed by real rum connoisseurs. Sometimes rum is diluted with vermouth or liqueur in a ratio of 1:1, 1:2. It is preferable to drink white rum diluted, since its taste is least pronounced.

What to drink with different types of rum

Each type of drink has its own taste, so there are differences in what and how to drink rum. Until Americans learned to mix rum and cola, one of the ingredients in the cocktail was cider or molasses. Europeans preferred to add liqueurs, coconut milk, or lemon and apple juices to rum. The inhabitants of both continents most often diluted rum with soda, lemonade and sparkling water. In other words, creating a rum-based cocktail has always been a matter of taste.

  • White rum– ideal for making cocktails due to its mild taste and high strength. Great with cola, lime, lemon and other juices.
  • Gold or amber rum– used to prepare Pina Colada and Daiquiri cocktails. Sometimes it is diluted with sweet sparkling water or offered instead of wine.
  • Dark rum– usually used undiluted. For appetizers, pineapples and avocados, melon and cherries are served, which are flavored with cinnamon powder. Black rum is used to make punch and grog. Black coffee with rum and a cigar are ideal.

Professional bartenders most often serve rum with ice cubes and lemon. During festive celebrations, this drink is placed in one of the coconut halves. An enchanting spectacle is the serving of glasses of rum decorated with sparklers. These methods of serving the pirate drink are favorite among bartenders from the Caribbean islands.

How and with what to drink rum is a mystery shrouded in darkness

So, from what I dug up, a fact follows: over many years of its existence, uniform rules for the use of this ancient pirate drink have not been developed. Today, opinions about what it is combined with, what it is eaten with, and how to drink rum in general, diverge, and in radically different directions.

Naturally, now no one will swallow the scalding elixir straight from the neck of the bottle, as Captain Flint did. True connoisseurs of this “fragrant temptation,” as the most famous female pirate Lady Mary Killigrew called rum, prefer drinks of dark or amber varieties.

This is a high-quality alcohol of noble blood, as they say, with an exquisite taste and indescribable aroma.

As you know, the guarantee of a high-quality drink is backed by a well-known brand. Today, the most popular brands include: Bacardi, Captain Morgan and Havana Club.

The strength of this alcoholic drink in its pure form ranges from 40 to 75%, so drinking it without a snack is not recommended, especially in large quantities. I wrote in a previous post how and what to dilute rum with.

And now I’ll tell you about the customary rum snacks here, and throughout Europe. But, for example, in the USA they won’t understand us, and what they serve with rum in Australia is inaccessible to us. Therefore, I won’t bother with their bells and whistles. Tea, they won't be offended!

Rum snacks – I love them all!

Since rum is, by definition, a sea drink, the best appetizer for it can be, first of all, seafood - shrimp, squid, fish of various types (with the exception of herring and sprat in tomato).

But these products are not always available, and many people do not like them or cannot consume them. Fortunately, there is another, quite decent food that you can eat with rum.

  • As a snack, you can serve red meat and poultry dishes with this alcoholic drink. In Spain there is even a special recipe with rum - chicken baked with oranges. Once the bird is baked, it and the oranges cut into slices are poured with strong rum (most often it is Bacardi 151 - after all, 75.5 degrees!) and set on fire. I haven’t eaten it myself, but I heard from friends that it’s very tasty!
  • Chopped sausages (not made from pork), canapés (mini-sandwiches) with sliced cheese and herbs, foie gras - go great with rum.
  • The most luxurious appetizer “Fedya, game!” Like baked pheasants with quail, like duck breast in red sauce, like deer tenderloin with juniper berries... My saliva, where are you going?
  • Dark rums go well with fruit salads, citrus fruits and fruits from exotic countries. By the way, in Mediterranean regions, a popular snack to accompany rum (where it is always diluted) is pickled fruit (lychee, guava, orange). You can buy them from us in canned form.
  • Capers and rum are a very good combination.
  • It’s a movie classic to drink this drink and smoke an expensive Cuban cigar. For me, it’s just show-off. Few people understand cigars (including me), and copying scenes from films is simply ridiculous.
  • Some lovers of the “pirate” drink prefer to snack on it with sweets - chocolate, pastries or cakes. There is a rule here - no oil creams. Baking should be light and always with fruit.

And again about cocktails

Rum is one of the most popular ingredients in cocktails, but mostly white varieties are used. The most popular rum-based alcoholic cocktails are Mohito and Barbados Punch.

What can you drink rum with? The “pirate” drink is mixed with lemon, orange or apple juice. It is diluted in the following ratio: one part rum to two parts juice. In addition to juices, rum is diluted with liqueur or vermouth in the same ratio. The result is a mixed cocktail with rum flavor and wine aroma. Try the Long Ilene cocktail.

White types with high strength can be diluted differently. For example, rum-based cocktails with the addition of cola are very popular all over the world. Rum is often served with coffee, resulting in a rather tasty drink.

It can be diluted with hot chocolate. This is not a drink for everyone, as it turns out too sweet and sticky.

Seven facts about rum

  1. Rum is the most popular drink in casinos.

  4. The lyrics and song "Yo-ho-ho and the Bottle of Rum" were written by Young Edwin Ellison in 1891. The pirates had no idea about this. And me too!
  5. The most famous rum lover is Ernest Hemingway. Remember the phrase? “My Mojito is in Bodeguita,” he wrote.

conclusions

In short, don't be afraid to experiment. Or maybe you will become the inventor of the best snack for rum or a cocktail of all times will be named after you! Or maybe mine? I went to experiment, and see you tomorrow!

P.S. I remembered an off-topic joke. The father is sitting in front of the TV, the son is reading a thick book. And then the announcer says: “Footballer N has signed a contract with the club for 10 million dollars.” The father looked at his son and slapped him on the head: “You’re sitting here, reading! It would be better if I went and played football!”

P.P.S. Do you know why pirates valued rum so much? You'll never guess! This is the only liquid that could be set on fire even in pouring rain! Plus, it wasn’t so scary to rob, rape and kill.

It's simple, friends.

The Cuba Libre (rum and cola) cocktail is one of the most popular alcoholic cocktails in the world. Its history, although not as colorful and long as the history of the appearance of rum itself, dates back over a hundred years. And according to some sources, this story began in one of the taverns of Old Havana at the very beginning of the twentieth century. On that day, not much different from others like it, American soldiers were resting in this tavern. The US Army deployed to Cuba at the time, supporting a national uprising, starting the Spanish-American War. Together with the Americans, Coca-Cola, which had already gained popularity on the North American continent, came to Cuba.

At some point, an officer with the rank of captain entered that tavern, and the soldiers stood up, standing at attention, greeting their commander. In almost complete silence, the officer walked up to the bar and asked the bartender to pour him “two fingers’ worth of rum.” After taking a small sip, the officer realized that warm rum was not exactly what he needed right now, and asked the bartender to mix the rum and cola, adding ice. The captain of the US armed forces drank the resulting cocktail at once and immediately spoke out loud about the pleasure he had just received. Only after this did he give the soldiers the command “At liberty.” Naturally, the soldiers watching this process immediately wanted to try what their officer had just spoken so eloquently about. And the bartender had to try hard not to delay the guests by mixing rum and cola.

The cocktail would probably have been a success in its first tasting round if... If such a small amount of rum and cola mixed in a glass would have been enough to be able to taste it properly. Looking into the puzzled faces of his soldiers, the officer literally ordered the bartender to once again mix rum and cola for everyone present. As soon as this was done, the captain raised his glass and shouted the slogan “Por Cuba Libre!” (“For the freedom of Cuba!”) and, without waiting for the soldiers to take up his cry, not without pleasure on his face, he drank his drink.

American troops in Cuba, the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries | Photo: Wikipedia

This cry determined the future name of the cocktail, which almost instantly became a hit on the island. The popularity of the cocktail was also significantly supported by the cheapness of its components. For a long time, drinking a cocktail, which firmly included light Caribbean rum and cola, was accompanied by shouts of “Por Cuba Libre!”

    Cocktail recipe Cuba Libre

The classic version of this cocktail is very simple, and if everything is clear with cola, then for authenticity it makes sense to use Cuban rum as rum:

    • One third light Caribbean rum
    • Two thirds cola
    • Ice and a slice of lime or lemon

Cocktail recipe Cuba Libre: Cuban Missile Crisis

Not many people know that shortly before the imposition of the embargo on Cuban goods, another version of the Cuba Libre cocktail recipe, which was called the “Cuban Crisis,” became widespread among American soldiers. This is still the same rum and cola, but just as in wartime the value of the sine of an angle can reach three, the rum content in this cocktail also increases rapidly. In fact, in numerical terms, the proportions of rum and cola remain the same, only these values are swapped.
