Tea business profitability. How to open a tea room

Studies show that the Russian tea market is no longer growing in quantitative terms. Statistics show that the market volumes have remained stable for several years: at the level of 180 thousand tons.

The main reason is the fact that more than 90% of Russians already consume tea. The country is among the world leaders in "tea drinking" - on average, one Russian per year drinks more than a kilogram of tea. That is, there is simply nowhere to increase the number of sales. Bringing new varieties of tea to the market is also not an option, just look at the shelves of supermarkets, where the variety of tea varieties and tea-containing mixtures makes your head spin. It remains only to take the quality of the tea consumption procedure.

Excursion to the topic

In Russia they drink "liquid" tea. Therefore, with the same amount of liquid, we "eat" three times less tea than the average Englishman, whose traditional recipes provide for the use of more tea. And if someone very smart in our country came up with a formula that only two grams of tea is needed for two hundred grams of water, then they use three to four times more raw materials for the same amount of water. We are also lazy enough to make real tea. It’s easier for us to throw a bag with some contents into a glass, which the seller calls “tea”, pour boiling water over it and drink it. At the same time, you still manage to savor the drink, recognizing notes of bergamot or thyme in it ...

With the growth of the welfare of citizens, the number of those who are systematically moving away from the habit of consuming teabags and packaged tea is growing. And now loose tea is in great demand. If you look at any supermarket or shopping center, everywhere you can find outlets selling tea and coffee by weight. And, judging by their number, the owners of these tea-packing shops are doing well. So why not ask for the opportunity to invest in opening a tea shop? You can even safely call it a "boutique", because in terms of meaning and content - a small highly specialized store - this is a boutique.

First steps

The first thing to do... No, not to look for a suitable store premises. First you need to study the market and look for suppliers. Due to the fact that you will be trading far from “consumer goods”, grocery wholesale bases will disappear immediately. You will not find anything original there - all the shelves of any grocery store are full of the same product at a maximum margin of 20%.

There are about a dozen large tea wholesalers in the entire Russian tea market, and all of them are concentrated in the central part of the country. If you are within walking distance from Moscow, you are lucky and you will be able to work with them directly. In the regions, their official representatives are present, who are free to set the price for the goods at their discretion. That is, you will already have an extra link in the commercial chain, which will reduce your own income. Very often, these official representatives themselves have retail outlets, and therefore they do not welcome hypothetical competitors very much. No, they will not refuse you directly, but they will not rush to help you either.

When you have to wait several days or even a week for a response to a request for a product price list and delivery conditions, you understand that you are not considered as a partner who will increase wholesale sales, but as a direct competitor who will reduce retail sales. Therefore, the advice is this: before looking for a trading place and purchasing equipment, find the best supplier. Once again, the main supplier will not have any interest in you until you create a branded network of outlets that, in terms of turnover, can be compared with those of its official representatives.

Option - franchise

Alternatively, you can purchase a franchise and enter a ready-made retail chain with your own brand, style, rules and regulations. True, sometimes franchise holders begin to tighten the screws over time, increasing the amount of royalties, mandatory sales volumes, and other things that hit your pocket. But, we repeat, as a way to enter the market, this option is optimal: you will have time to study the market from the inside, learn to understand tea varieties and sales methods, and undergo training. And then, if something does not suit you, you can completely step into free swimming. If this path seems interesting to you, contact the Internet search engines with the query "tea franchise".

But even for a franchise start, the costs will be significant. So, for the three most famous tea franchises, only lump-sum contributions fluctuate around 5-6 thousand dollars (if you want to have an exclusive for the city, double the amount), and the amount of necessary investments starts from 30 thousand dollars.

Tea plantation"

So, the market has been studied, suppliers have been found, the legal registration of the future store has been completed (a qualified lawyer will help with the choice of legal form, there is no shortage of such services now). Now you can be puzzled by the search and preparation of commercial premises.

Now trying to enter shopping centers and hypermarkets is practically useless. Firstly, in large centers there is an acute shortage of small areas, and those that are - "islands" and walls - do not meet the requirements. Secondly, here you will face fierce competition, which will in no way increase optimism. It would be best to open a stationary tea shop and open outlets in shopping centers in the future.

The optimal space for a store is 30 sq. m on the first line in a busy area. The city center is good, but expensive. The sleeping area is cheap, but you will experience problems with the speed of accumulating a circle of regular customers (namely, they will make you more than 70% of the cash desk). Fortunately, now the delimitation of districts into business and bedroom districts in many Russian cities has come to naught, and business districts quietly coexist with bedroom quarters. So look for such places where people who consider themselves to be the middle class mainly live, and where many firms with “office plankton” are concentrated. Worker-peasant microdistricts with industrial zones can be deleted from the list: with all due respect to people, you first of all want to earn money, and not just bring the culture of tea consumption to the masses.

The cost of renting such a retail space ranges from 900-1000 rubles per "square" per month, that is, the monthly rent will cost you about 30 thousand rubles (do not forget about the commission to the realtor, the amount of which, as a rule, is the cost of a monthly rent) . On this insignificant area you will place the actual trading floor, a warehouse, an office for the chief accountant.

Did you find the right place? Let's start the repair. Immediately contact not the construction workers, who will repair anything cheaply and angrily, but to a specialized office, where they will first of all help you with the design project of the store. After all, as experts say, the secret of the success of a tea boutique is not in advertising certain types of tea, but in advertising the store itself. Wealthy people will be drawn to a tea shop with a good design, high-quality equipment and well-trained staff. Sometimes among these well-to-do people there will be those who know nothing about tea, but like to squander money widely and generously. At the same time, they do it loudly and in front of everyone, and for those who did not see, they themselves will tell everything and show exactly where it happened. One way or another, investing in the repair and decoration of the store, you are investing in its advertising as a reputable establishment. Yes, all this will cost a pretty penny, but where to go? So be prepared to spend 1.5-2 million rubles.

This amount includes the development of the design concept of the store itself, its corporate identity and the style of the employees’ uniforms (in no case should you allow “various sorts” in their clothes!), Signboard, equipment, furniture, office equipment, branded packaging material (you won’t pack elite tea in faceless plastic bags).

Give me tea!

Simultaneously with the repair and finishing work, form your order for the supply of goods. The cost will be at least 500 thousand rubles. Be sure to keep in mind that your buyer will be interested not only in tea or coffee, but also in dishes and appliances for their preparation (Turks, coffee grinders, French presses, etc.). In addition, very often tea and coffee will be bought from you as a gift, so if interesting and useful things are available, the average bill will increase significantly.

At the first stage of forming the assortment of the store, limit yourself to a small number of varieties of tea and coffee. Here, “small” should be understood as “within 80-100 varieties”, since successful tea shops offer customers up to three hundred varieties of tea and coffee. But they already have market knowledge and practical experience, but you still have to develop them, so do not try to embrace the immensity right away.

Over time, you will figure out in which season which variety is best, and which varieties in your city and no one will take for nothing.

Personnel issue

The search for suitable candidates can be delayed, so look in all directions at once, from submitting an ad in the media to ordering employees through a recruitment agency. Three sales assistants working on a flexible schedule is definitely enough. Whether you need a manager or you can handle one store yourself is up to you. An accountant as such is not needed, his functions can be assigned to an accounting firm. You can hire a cleaning lady to clean the premises, or you can conclude an agreement with a cleaning company. As practice shows, costs increase slightly, and the quality of cleaning in the latter is not an example higher.

All costs for payroll, utilities and security fit into 100 thousand rubles. About the same amount you will spend the first six months on advertising the store in the media. You can’t do without this, even taking into account the fact that the store covers a small part of the city and no one will specially go to you from the other end. It is necessary to create an image of a serious institution for serious people, just like in the film "Generation "P"": "A respectable Lord for respectable gentlemen."

Money loves the account

The cost of opening a tea shop is large - about 3 million rubles. Monthly expenses - 250 thousand rubles, not counting the cost of replenishing the inventory. Risks, as when opening any highly specialized store, are also present. How quickly can you recoup the invested funds with a more or less favorable development of the situation? Let's count.

The average check of such a store is 700-800 rubles with an average trade margin of 100% (some chains of tea stores proudly state that their average mark-up reaches 200%). To break even in terms of operating expenses, you need to reach the level of sales of 600 thousand rubles (do not forget about tax deductions). When the store is open seven days a week and with a ten-hour shift, you should have 30 customers a day, which is quite achievable. The average payback rate for such a project with a competent and patient approach is one and a half years.

In principle, a well-located store, which is actively advertised, completely lets through itself a much larger number of visitors. And it depends only on you and your staff whether a casual visitor will become your regular customer who will buy tea both for himself and as a gift.

Opening a tea business: profitable or not?

Shops selling elite tea by weight, where you can find products from all over the world, are in steady demand among connoisseurs of this drink. The spread of consumer culture contributes to the growth of the market.

tea shop business plan

It increases by 10-30% annually. There are no particular barriers to entry and development in the tea business, which makes it attractive to many entrepreneurs who are wondering how to open a tea shop.

Company registration

To obtain all the documents, there is no need to waste your own time. The full package will cost $100–200 at the nearest law office.

room

The main requirement to organize a shop selling loose tea is high traffic. A good drink is not a necessity, so buying it is an impulsive choice. Up to 50% of the customers of such a store are casual buyers. Therefore, only a large flow of visitors can make a profit for this business.

The organization of this store is divided depending on the chosen premises:

  • Rent in a shopping center. To open such a store, there is no need for large retail space. 6 square meters is enough to place an island with racks of the most popular teas in a shopping center or at the exit of a supermarket. Thanks to a successful placement, it is possible to ensure loading and find regular customers for the store. This option is perfect for successfully starting a business at minimal cost and a constant flow of visitors.
  • Rent of premises for a shop with a separate entrance. Such a point will become a cozy place for connoisseurs of the drink. Large showcases and an original signboard will attract the attention of customers.

The property of 30 square meters is divided into 3 functional zones:

  • A trading floor with racks, with countless jars and tea packages.
  • Utility room for storage. It should be a dry, dark place that is well ventilated. A quality product quickly loses its properties and deteriorates. Therefore, the organization of appropriate storage conditions for tea will become a prerequisite.
  • Tasting room. In the room, you should allocate space for 3-4 tables, where you can offer the client to try their favorite varieties of tea, or organize a small cafeteria.

Range

The assortment of the store should be as wide as possible. Tea is classified:

  • by type: black, green, white, herbal, fruity, flavored blends;
  • by origin - India, China, Sri Lanka and others;
  • according to the quality of the sheet - from the third to the highest grade.

To open a store and start a tea shop, you need to purchase 40-50 types of tea. Over time, the range should be expanded to 200-250 items. Despite this, regular customers of the store concentrate their choice on 20 varieties, the rest of the products are intended for the casual buyer. A very important component in the structure of the store's income is the trade in coffee and related products.

Thirty varieties of good coffee of different roasts will attract connoisseurs of the drink and provide a constant income.

The main related products of the shop are:

  • cups;
  • teapots;
  • Turks;
  • saucers;
  • jars for storage;
  • strainers;
  • coffee pots;
  • thermometers;
  • various types of sugar;
  • candied fruit;
  • jams;
  • cookies;
  • chocolate and other confectionery.

Souvenirs from beverage producing countries are also in demand.

Suppliers

The ideal option would be an established import. To do this, you will have to visit the country of origin and conclude contracts for the wholesale supply of selected varieties to the store. You will have to pay for the high yield of the method. Customs clearance and obtaining the appropriate quality certificates will fall on the shoulders of the entrepreneur. Another downside is volume. The minimum batch of tea is designed for sale in a network of at least four points of sale. Consequently, a novice entrepreneur can, in general, forget about expanding the range due to various countries of origin.

For those unable to travel to China, India or Sri Lanka, an alternative method would be to purchase from local wholesale distributors. The larger the supplier, the lower the cost of production and the higher the batch size.

Formation of the price policy of the tea shop

When setting prices for products, first of all, attention should be paid to monitoring the tea market. To do this, you need to compare the prices of competitors and offers of online stores. It should be remembered that the margin on the most popular types of drinks should be minimal, while exclusive products should have a high return on sales.

tea shop staff

For the operation of such a store in the hall of the shopping center, you will need 1 sales assistant who will be able to weigh the goods, provide the necessary information to the client and brew a cup of drink with high quality.

To run a separate store, you will need 2 sales assistants who will serve customers, help with product selection, advise on cooking methods, prepare and serve tea and coffee for tasting. You will need an administrator to control staff and manage inventory.

The main requirements for the selection of candidates for a tea shop will be:

  • Friendliness.
  • A responsibility.
  • Sociability.
  • Neatness.
  • Knowledge of the range, preparation techniques, history of origin and production technologies of beverages.

The ideal option for a novice entrepreneur would be employees with experience in these stores. Otherwise, you will have to deal with staff training yourself. The training process in large networks of outlets lasts from 3 months to a year and a half. Experienced entrepreneurs, when choosing candidates, give preference to women because of neatness and communication skills. Staff salaries consist of a fixed rate and a percentage of sales.

An important element for tea buyers will be the uniform, which will emphasize the corporate identity of the tea shop.

Shop equipment

The operation of the store will be ensured by:

  • Showcases and shelving.
  • Packages for packing drinks.
  • Electronic balance.
  • Coffee machine.
  • Cash register.
  • Coffee grinder.
  • Scoops for drinks.
  • Dishes for tasting (cups, saucers, teapots, etc.).
  • Tables and chairs.

Profitability of the tea business

The average cost to open a shop is $10,000. The maximum investment in opening an elite shop for the sale of exclusive products is 40 thousand dollars.

  • Room rent for the first and last month 2000$.
  • Equipment and furniture $2500.
  • The first batch of goods 2000$.
  • Utilities and communications $200.
  • Advertising 500$.
  • Staff $1000 (including outsourced accountant work).

The average turnover of the store is 2 thousand dollars, and the margin for most of the assortment is 100%. The payback of most shops is achieved within the first year of operation. Profit in the first months of work varies from $500 to $1000.

Today I will describe the idea of a business selling tea.

Let's make a reservation right away that we will sell, not some kind of “tea with an elephant” or in bags, but rather expensive, loose tea and coffee in premium class beans.

There are quite a lot of types of tea under various brands in grocery stores. Conventionally, all tea that is in stores can be divided into 4 groups:

  • Granular tea - after oxidation, the tea leaves are passed through shafts, which roll them and cut them. Not only the first, but also the following tea tree leaves are used. In 1997, the share of such tea was 87.9% of world production. They are also produced in India and Ceylon.
  • Tea in bags - consists of tea crumbs and dust.
  • Brick tea - made from old leaves and crushed branches, by pressing.
  • Instant tea is a powder obtained by carrying out a reaction with the elimination of water molecules from brewed tea. Weak taste and aroma are compensated by flavors.

In general, all of the above groups belong to low-grade ground teas. We will open a shop for the sale of medium and high grade tea by weight. Such tea is usually called “gift tea”. It is bought together with tea sets, or separately in beautiful packages, there are also people who drink it all the time. The cost of such tea ranges from 60 to 200 rubles per 100 grams.

How to open a tea business from scratch

Now a few words about what is needed to open such a shop. First of all, you need to register as an individual entrepreneur.

A store. First of all, you need to decide on the place of sale. A large sales area is not required, 8-10 square meters will be enough. It should be located in a place with a large crowd of people, the ideal place would be where people buy gifts for the holidays, but people will pass there on weekdays. If you do not want to invest a lot of money in advertising, then the premises should be of the first level with access to a high-traffic street. Since teas are products, you will need a sink, sewerage, etc., you will be required to conclude from the SES.

Equipment. For a business selling loose tea, you will definitely need a scale, it is better to take an industrial one with a double display. They weigh grams well, and the buyer will immediately see how much they poured into him. Tea is best stored in special boxes (which you will also purchase from the supplier), in a dry place. You can put them on stands and show tea directly from them. You will need cash register equipment depending on your type of taxation.

Range. Tea differs in origin: Chinese, Indian, Ceylon, Japanese, Indo-China, African, Turkish and so on. There are two categories of tea, according to the degree of oxidation - green and black, but there are also "intermediate" types on the market: white, yellow, oolong, pu-erh. There is also a lot of "fruit" tea, it is green or black with pieces of fruit. In the first filling of the assortment, it is best to buy "usual" tea, it is black and green, with various additives (fruits, cinnamon, leaves of other plants). And add a little “novelties”, yellow, oolong, pu-erh, white tea, but don’t buy a lot, maybe people will just get scared of new types of tea.

We started our assortment with tea. Don't forget that people also drink coffee that is brewed in Turks. Well, of course, beautiful table sets - a teapot, and mugs. Teapots buy different and glass and clay, they have their own characteristics. Below we will tell you what you can add to the range.

Suppliers. In Russia, there are several large companies selling medium and high class tea, such as the Russian Tea Company. The only problem you will face is the minimum purchase amount. Wholesale tea is sold in plastic bags weighing 1.8 kg.

Prices. At the above supplier, 1 package of tea (1.8 kg) costs 527.30 rubles. Those. about 31.8 rubles per 100 grams. You need to clarify the prices, but, in my opinion, the average price is 160 rubles / 100 gr., i.e. from the sale of 100 gr. we will get 128.2 rubles. We will sell 1 package for ~2300 rubles. Do not forget that you need to buy bags, from the amount received for 100 gr. subtract ~8 rubles. I do not take into account shipping, rental and taxes, you have to calculate this for yourself.

Customer. I met a lot where, when entering the store, the seller does not pay attention to the visitor. In no case! This should be clear to anyone, but still. You sell "curiosity", for the most part, people are afraid of something new and unknown, also with tea. You can not give the buyer a chance to doubt. He came to you, which means he was interested, do not discourage interest. Immediately find out for whom he buys, what are his preferences in choosing (black \ green \ fruit), have you tried any weight teas, start communication. Offer suitable options, take a box of tea, show him in loose form, let him evaluate the smell. Ideal when you have a teapot and can brew 1-2 cups of tea and offer sweets to sample. Tell him more about the methods of brewing, about the taste properties of tea. So you will win the loyalty of the buyer and the next time he will come to you.

Trade and development. I must say right away that tea is not a very popular commodity in small towns, but, nevertheless, there are people who have been successfully working for 5-7 years. Immediately after the opening, call all the restaurants and cafes in the city and offer them tea of various types. Restaurants will not buy tea in bags (1.8 kg) because they may not like the customers and will not drink. You will offer supplies of various types in small portions of 200-300 grams. In the future, they will buy from you constantly.

They eat sweets with tea, everyone knows this. So why would you not only be engaged in the business of selling tea, but also selling sweets, but not barberry sweets for a ruble, but high-quality products. You can, for example, sell loose chocolate.

Opening of Bar Puer on Vladimirskaya

The first day of November was unusually full of tea novelties, one of which we tried at the opening Puer Bar on Kolokolnaya(metro station Vladimirskaya/Dostoevskaya). The guys from the Puer bar (they are Zen Tea) position themselves as the first non-alcoholic (that's really, really) bar with a wide selection of teas and coffees from different regions, where everyone can have a great rest and spend their free time! Now this pu-erh bar is included in the list of the best tea shops in St. Petersburg.

The tea bar is very close to the metro, literally 50 meters away - very convenient. Quite small, 15 meters, elongated along the bar counter, but quite cozy already now. The choice of tea and coffee is really diverse, here are Chinese (pu-erh, green, white, oolong, red) and Indian and flavored teas. In the photo you can see a huge 3 kg pu-erh pancake - the pride of the owner! I hope it tastes as good as the shen pu-erh it puts in.

Coffee is represented by about 10-12 varieties, including a rare Papuan Guinean variety. There is also my favorite Maragogype and Ethiopian. Coffee is sold in beans, they promise that a coffee grinder will arrive soon.

In addition to buying tea and coffee itself, you can drink tea and coffee on the spot, there is a coffee machine, and tea and coffee can be taken with you, poured into classic cardboard cups with a lid. Takeaway tea and coffee to go- the highlight of this place!

Prices for inexpensive teas are indicated, mainly for 100 grams, for elite ones - for 25 grams. Among the elite, aged shen pu-erh 2004 Lu Yu.

Whether pu-erh pancakes break, I did not specify. Among the interesting specimens are elite Taiwanese oolongs from Formosa Tea. There are awesome Lao Cha Wang 12 years old and Lao Cha Wang 15 years old. But Feng Huang Dan Cong Gui Hua Xiang did not find.

Soon, a real menu and a bar tea card will appear here, stay tuned - they promise that it will be very unusual and surprise you.

There are also delicious nishtyaki, at the opening we were treated to fresh cookies with raisins.

The guys treated us to two teas: “deflated” boiled pu-erh and an unusual 7-year-old Tie Guanyin in Ku Gua Bitter Cucumber(bitter gourd). I did not understand Pu-erh at all, while it was boiled in a teapot for several minutes, most likely already again, because of this its taste was weak and not outstanding. Yes, this is not Mengku's 2006 Gu Shu Shu Cha, which is delicious when brewed!

Roasted oolong in bitter cucumber was brewed together with bits of bitter gourd in a ceramic gaiwan.

Aroma I liked it, pleasant, floral, with a light caramel at the end.

Infusion color soft, golden, light amber.

Taste with a noticeable sourness, with an invigorating, refreshing aftertaste.

tea shop business plan

Unfortunately, I practically did not feel Tie Guanyin. If you look at this TG by grading the quality of tea in 3 ways, then the tea is far from the best.

Pros of Bara Puer:

  • a wide format of the institution, it is a tea shop, a coffee shop, a bar (non-alcoholic), a tea and coffee shop - all at once, in one room.
  • friendly staff.
  • varied selection of teas and coffees.
  • different price range.
  • relatively inexpensive. Although it is better to compare with other tea shops in St. Petersburg.

Minuses:

  • there is not enough space, if several people sit at the counter, then it will be problematic to see the tea standing behind their backs.
  • raw decor. Although I really liked the Buddha on the wall, it fit perfectly between the tea jars.
  • petty price tags.

An excellent place appeared in the center, I wish the guys good luck in the development and distribution of healthy drinks.

Perhaps the most important thing is to approach the matter wisely. Tea has always been considered an exquisite drink that has not lost its relevance over the centuries. The variety of flavors and varieties of tea only increases interest in it. In many countries of the world, tea drinking has become a tradition, and brewing a drink has become a whole ritual.

Not surprisingly, teahouses are very popular. But legitimate questions arise. How to organize a tea business so that it is not unprofitable? What do you need to start your business with? How to write the right business plan? What nuances should you pay attention to when opening a teahouse from scratch?

Individual features of tea business

The business associated with the tea business is original and aimed at a certain circle of people who love and understand fine varieties of tea. After all, the cost of many elite varieties of tea is high, so whether your teahouse will flourish depends on the number of customers who can pay for good tea.

What you should focus on when opening a tea room:

  • A tea shop will be popular only if the offered goods are of high quality. There are so many fakes on the market.
  • High level of customer service with an individual approach to each. This primarily includes an explanation of the taste of each variety and advice on choosing the right one.
  • Properly selected staff is half the success. Therefore, each of the hired distributors must understand the entire range of goods, know the advantages of each variety and be able to correctly convey information to the client.
  • Promotions and other marketing activities should be carried out regularly to draw attention to the teahouse. Expand your circle of customers by attracting new ones with the help of good advertising.

Is it profitable to open a tea shop? You can answer this question only after a thorough study of the market. For example, it is better to organize such an enterprise in large cities, and not in small towns, where there are hardly any connoisseurs of rare tea, much less able to pay for it.

Having decided to organize a tea house from scratch, every businessman must decide on the format of the future business. There are several options for organizing a tea shop, and each requires certain conditions.

  • The largest in terms of organization is a shop with a separate tea tasting area. The advantage of this approach is the ability for the client to immediately evaluate the taste characteristics of one or more varieties of tea. Such a store in the future can expand to a tea cafe and increase profits. The other side of this tea house option: it will require a large investment:
    • room decor;
    • a wide range of products and related products for making tea, such as teapots, cups, etc.
  • Opening an ordinary tea shop without the opportunity to taste tea will require lower costs, but it can be located in the city center by renting a small room. And permits will require much less. There is also no need to purchase specific equipment. The cost of repairs and staff salaries will be reduced.
  • The most low-cost will be the opening of an ordinary tea stall, for example, in a shopping center. This type of business will help those entrepreneurs who want to evaluate the profitability of the tea industry, find out if tea is popular and which varieties of tea are in greater demand. After work, the entrepreneur will be able to evaluate the profitability and in the future open a tea shop with less losses.

To determine the choice of a suitable business solution, it is worth assessing the possible risks, existing competition and the narrowness of the demand in the city where you plan to open a tea shop from scratch.

We draw up a business plan

Before drawing up a business plan, it is necessary to carefully analyze all the components of the tea industry that will directly or indirectly affect the development of the tea industry.

  1. Acquaintance with the specifics of the tea trade.
  2. Organizational issues: on rent, repair, collection of documentary components, such as the necessary permits.
  3. Study of marketing in the tea industry.

In the course of studying the market for a guide for future entrepreneurs, there are a few basic questions, the answers to which will help the proper organization of the business.

  • What is the popularity of tea products in the city where it is planned to open a tea shop.
  • Are there competitors in this area, studying their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Which tea varieties are in great demand among buyers.
  • The financial component of the consumer audience. It depends on which varieties of tea it is more profitable to pay attention to. For example, if the main buyer is the middle class, then it makes no sense to buy expensive teas in large quantities.

The main points of the business plan

Having studied the preliminary data, the entrepreneur can decide on the format of the future tea house, the price offer, and the choice of future tea suppliers. And to answer the main question: what does it take to open a tea shop? Here are the main points of a business plan:

  1. Describe in detail what assortment is planned for sale, who is the selected supplier of the goods and what are the exact delivery dates for each type of tea.
  2. All planned advertising manipulations and marketing solutions with the level of effectiveness of each channel of the communication sphere. And also the cost of them.
  3. Calculation of possible costs for the search for premises, the cost of rent and repair work. Assessment of the suitability of such premises for the opening of a tea shop.
  4. Tea shop schedule.
  5. List of necessary equipment, furniture and lighting.
  6. A detailed plan for spending, investing and finding financial security options.
  7. Plan for future sales in a positive analysis.
  8. Financial calculations of the effectiveness of the future project.
  9. Assumed risks and options for managing consequences.
  10. A step-by-step plan for organizing and opening a teahouse from scratch. Designation of control points in control intervals.

Now let's look at the step-by-step instructions for opening a tea room.

Registering a tea house

Registering a teahouse will take time. Much depends on the direction of your business. First of all, an enterprise is registered with the tax authority as an individual entrepreneur or LLC if you plan to search for partners or expand your network. Study the available tax system in your area so that there is no friction in the future.

The above documents will require:

  • Lease agreement or ownership of the tea room.
  • Sanitary Service Permit.
  • Conclusion on fire safety.
  • Local administrative permission to trade.
  • Sanitary books for all employees of the teahouse.
  • Contracts for waste removal and disinfection works.
  • Conclusion on the correct operation of the scales, CCA certificate and other documents.

Suppliers must require quality certificates for tea products.

Nuances when choosing a room

A large percentage of the success of a future teahouse depends on the location. The place is important precisely because of the atmosphere, it is desirable to place it in the park part of the city, where a person can take a break from the hustle and bustle.

Saving on rent will not give positive results, but opening a teahouse in the city center does not always guarantee a positive result. Ideal average value for money. Focus on the audience that is located near the teahouse.

The future tea room must meet certain standards:

  • well ventilated;
  • the area should be at least 30 m 2, a lot depends on the layout and design;
  • without problems with communal and sanitary services;
  • good street lighting on the adjacent tea street;
  • an easy way to find sellers in the area;
  • location of sleeping and business districts.

It is also necessary to assess the social status of potential clients and find out if there is a bus stop or metro station nearby.

Carefully study the advantages of the rented premises: the presence of a storage room, a separate bathroom, water supply. Estimate what repairs will be required, only then conclude a contract.

Suppliers

No business can be organized without the right approach to business. Therefore, first of all, you should take care of finding suitable suppliers of goods. Do not forget that tea is a specific product and mostly imported. So before proceeding with the paperwork, you should study the supplier market.

The problem lies in the variable cost of goods and the high dependence on currency fluctuations. Ideally, it is better to select suppliers without intermediaries abroad, but the practical side shows the impossibility of implementing this option. Because for business you need to purchase expensive varieties of tea like:

  • indian,
  • Ceylonese
  • Japanese.

The purchase is profitable only in large quantities, and when opening a new business, there is no need to bear such costs. The search for foreign suppliers can only be considered when you have a whole network of tea houses.

Consequently, it will be necessary to look for suitable suppliers among domestic firms. When making a choice, it is necessary to find the optimal conditions for partnership:

  1. A wide range of teas, including elite varieties.
  2. specific delivery times.
  3. Favorable price for the goods.
  4. Possibility to postpone payment for the received goods due to unforeseen circumstances.

Not every wholesale base is suitable for the supply of tea, especially if you are aiming for the quality of the goods. Many wholesalers offer franchises at the best price, this will allow even a beginner to start a business without strong risks. The entrepreneur will be able to gain experience and learn a lot about the product, having determined for himself the right assortment for future orders.

Typically, the price of a franchise ranges from 300 to 400 thousand, this is with a total business investment of 1.5 million rubles.

What equipment is needed for a tea room?

To open a teahouse you will need:

  • electronic balance;
  • shelves, showcases, counter;
  • cash register;
  • trays for tea, scoops to collect it;
  • lighting devices to visually ennoble the room and highlight certain types of tea;
  • outdoor sign;
  • advertising;
  • tea jars;
  • vendor uniforms;
  • packaging bags, preferably paper, so that the tea does not lose its taste. Can with brand logo for additional promotion,

If you are planning a tasting, then you need to equip the kitchen, as well as purchase special sets for brewing tea.

Selection of tea assortment

At the initial stage of opening a teahouse, you should opt for a hundred of the most popular varieties of tea. You should not immediately buy exotic species, perhaps there will be no demand for them, and the goods will be stale. Gradually, you yourself will be able to evaluate in practice what sells better, what does not. Perhaps there will be a demand for other varieties.

Types of tea costing from 200-400 rubles per 100 grams are considered to be popular, they should make up the majority of all stocks. Expensive varieties, the price of which is from 2500 rubles, should be purchased carefully and in small quantities.

Teas are classified by type:

  • White;
  • black;
  • green;
  • Red;
  • yellow;
  • medical;
  • flavored.

Financial costs of opening a teahouse

How much does it cost to open a tea shop from scratch? To do this, it is worth analyzing possible business options and considering the cost of organizing a tea shop.

  1. Opening a teahouse with a tasting room will cost an entrepreneur from 1.5-1.8 million rubles. Much depends on the chosen design and repair costs.
  2. An ordinary tea shop without tasting services will cost about 800 thousand. For this option, a room area of 20 m 2 is sufficient.
  3. Opening a tea stall will help save even more on renting a room: only about 10 m 2 will be required. And at a cost, a tea stall will cost 300 thousand rubles.

The increase in costs depends on the accompanying factors, so the option of additional costs should be considered. So, when planning, add 10-15% of the total amount to the estimated figure.

Pros and cons of a tea business

As in any business, you will have ups and downs, joy and disappointment. Let's look at the strengths and weaknesses of the tea business.

Advantages:

  • Small initial investment. The initial stage will not require a lot of equipment, a huge room and a large amount of goods.
  • Long shelf life. This is a big plus, since tea is not a perishable product. No need to constantly maintain storage conditions and worry about how to quickly sell the goods.
  • Demand for products among the population exists despite seasonal fluctuations in sales.
  • Possibility to sell other goods along with tea.
  • The markup ranges from 100 to 150%.
  • The tea shop is a profitable and charming business in its own way. There are growing trends in the consumption of branded teas. And the trade itself brings profit and aesthetic pleasure to sellers and buyers.
  • The prospect of expanding from one point to a whole network of tea shops.
  • Opportunity to conduct business under the brand name of a well-known company. Probably, it will even be possible to find a franchise without investments for implementation.

Flaws:

  • Rivalry among tea shop owners.
  • Dependence on the economic situation and exchange rates, as a large amount of tea is of foreign origin.
  • Such a product will not be cost-effective in small towns.

How to open a tea shop from scratch?

Be sure: with a competent approach to business, you will succeed. The tea direction has always occupied a special niche in the trading industry, as the list of potential customers includes people with different tastes and different material wealth. It's no secret that the idea requires initial capital, but it justifies itself pretty quickly. Tea is very close to the food theme, and therefore will always be in demand. So, you have the desire and opportunity to open a tea shop. Where to start and how to continue? Let's look at each step in order.

Choosing a sales format

Before opening a store, it is worth deciding on its type and format. To do this, you need to take into account your capital and the time frame in which you plan to meet. There are the following options:

  • own shop;
  • outlet in a large shopping and entertainment center;
  • a separate tray in the market;
  • online store.

Each of the formats has its own characteristics. For example, a store will allow you to expand your products and generate income not only from tea, but also from specialized tableware, tea accessories, various types of sugar, and even sweets. Opening a separate store suggests an excellent career prospect: in the future, you can open a small cafe. Owning a store is also associated with considerable costs, if you take into account the search for a suitable place, renting a room, repairs, purchasing expensive equipment, interior design and monthly expenses.

The second option is a small retail outlet. The costs will be less, but the assortment is just as diverse. The benefit is that the client does not go specifically to you, but when buying products in the supermarket, he also chooses tea. It is unlikely that you will expand the marketplace to sell new products. But, as practice shows, 8 sq. m is enough to accommodate such necessary things as racks, shelves, scales, a place for the seller.

The tray type in the subway or on the market also has its advantages. Often, the owners exhibit only well-known brands. The advantage is that people go to the market prepared in advance for shopping.

An interesting option without investing in premises and staff is the opening of an online store. To design the site, you can use the services of a web designer. Just as in the previous cases, you need to find suppliers, select an assortment, and set prices. A separate part of the work will be advertising on the Internet. However, this product is ordered in this way relatively rarely. Unless if we are talking about exclusive types of tea or a low price.

Business registration

The next thing to do is legalize the business. If you are a beginner, you need to become a sole trader. As the case develops, it will probably be possible to register a company. This will require two weeks of time and an amount of about 6,000 rubles (registration + certification of documents by a notary office). You can simplify this process and ask for help from a law firm, its employees, for an additional fee, will completely take control of the procedure.

Let's return to the IP: a request is submitted to the tax service at the location of your company to register you as an entrepreneur and enter it in the state register. Next, you need to pay a tax (duty) in the amount of 800 rubles and submit an application according to the established model. After that, within five working days you will have a document on registration.

Premises selection

The selection of premises directly depends on the format of the store that you have chosen. But there are common factors for all types of tea shops. What should be considered when choosing a location for your business?

  1. The location of the object of trade. The greater the flow of people, the greater the revenue, so first of all look for suitable buildings in the city center or in busy areas. It is not necessary to do this yourself, it is possible to order a search for a specialized agency.

Important: when the necessary trading platform is found, in order to reduce subsequent costs, it is worth concluding a lease for a long time for a period of six months. Then the tenant will not be able to raise the rent every month.

  1. Sales area size. A small space is also suitable for a tea shop, and a medium-sized area is needed for a point in a shopping center. If you decide to open a store in a separate room, 20-25 sq. m. There is another option - to convert a one-room apartment on the ground floor.

It is also worth taking seriously the design of the interior, which will appeal to customers and leave a desire to come again and again.

Advice: make sure you have a utility room for storing tea. It should be dark, dry and warm - these indicators are necessary to maintain product quality.

Do not forget that if the business flourishes, you will need more space to store goods, as well as an office for employees, such as an accountant or administrator, financial director.

Supplier selection

Today, on the Web, you can very quickly and easily find qualified suppliers of the right products. Sometimes this may take several minutes. Find out the basic information about the companies so that you only deal with reliable manufacturers.

The most demanded suppliers in the Russian market are:

  • Russian Tea Company;
  • Forsman;
  • Nadine;
  • Royal courtyard.

After you get acquainted with the list of suppliers, you need to contact their representatives in your city. Most likely, many of them have their own retail outlets, and therefore they will be reluctant to communicate with you - as with a potential competitor. The price list ordered from them can usually be received in 3-4 days. But how not to miscalculate with a choice? Criteria: monetary benefit and a wide range.

It is important to remember that when choosing which of the suppliers you will work with, you should pay attention to the quality and quantity of products that he can provide. Therefore, remember that your main condition in this case is a rich assortment.

Advice: cooperate directly or via the Internet with suppliers, and not with wholesalers. This will give you a reputation as a serious and interested customer, as well as the opportunity to receive original teas.

When you achieve some success in business, you can think about expanding the circle of suppliers and visit a tea exhibition. Similar events are held in different countries of the world. You will receive exclusive and possibly new types of products. There are some additional nuances: knowledge of English is required, an advance payment when buying tea, its customs clearance and obtaining quality certificates.

Purchase of equipment

It is easy to find or order high-quality commercial equipment in a short time. It will take 2-3 weeks to make it. How does this procedure take place?

A master comes to your store, takes the necessary measurements, and soon shows several sketches, among which you can choose the one you like best. After that, the amount of purchased commercial equipment will be named. Experience shows that its average price is 30 thousand rubles. When choosing furniture and showcases, it is important not to forget about the most important thing - the cash register. It will cost about 13,500 rubles.

As you can see, the equipment of the trading floor does not necessarily require large expenditures. This is what gives this line of business an advantage over others. The list of equipment important for a tea shop may include:

  • glass jars for bulk products;
  • spatulas for weighing tea;
  • cash register,;
  • racks and showcases;
  • electronic balance.

As for the tea itself, you need to carefully consider how much product is required to get started. The assortment should include black, green, red, herbal and herbal-fruit blends. It is perfectly acceptable to also include exotic varieties: white, blue, etc.

In stock it is desirable to always have tea by weight, pressed and bagged teas. Sometimes people are looking for a granular drink as well. A start-up store may have at least 50 varieties at its disposal. Over time, it will be beneficial to add tea accessories and related products to this assortment: teapots, cups of all kinds, calabash, jars for storing tea, thermo mugs, thermoses, etc.

In general, to purchase everything you need to open a small tea shop, you need to spend less than 500,000 rubles. Of course, you can save a lot if you purchase time-tested (used) display racks. Just a week of preparation - and you can start working!

Personnel attraction

The most demanded and important task remains the selection of qualified and experienced workers. There are several ways to find staff. Here are some ways to help you find employees:

  • Placing ads on the search for personnel on the Internet on special sites. If you have created your own website together with the store, be sure to use it. But this method of posting vacancies will be effective only if your store is well-known, prestigious and recognizable. It is good if a potential employee can leave his profile or resume on the site.
  • Advertising in print media. Not at all outdated and common method. Allows the employer to find both a semi-skilled worker and various managers and administrators.
  • Search for personnel with the help of specialized agencies. The services of recruiting companies are useful, but expensive. The issue price sometimes reaches the employee's annual salary.
  • Search for employees using advertising on external media (bigboards, lightboxes, scoreboards). Advertising on electronic media is also not cheap. But when placing such an ad, we focus on a large flow of people, so it is important to look for an effective location.

Advice: if you find a seller, set a trial period for him, during which you observe his work or ask your friends to evaluate the quality of service. A good employee is interested in the prosperity of the business and the well-being of consumers. It depends on your seller whether the customer wants to visit the store again. People need attention, and often even the assortment plays a less important role. For example, sometimes you can see that a nice and friendly saleswoman who knows how to deal with people line up in huge queues.

Conducting an advertising campaign

You may be wondering what an attractive advertisement for a tea shop should be and will it be effective? The answer is simple - it all depends on your imagination and resourcefulness. Knowledge of fashion trends can play an important role in this. Do not underestimate the power of advertising, because in many cases a beautiful sign is 50% of success! Just remember the 3 basic principles of successful advertising:

  • Brightness and memorability (let people passing by look at your sign with interest);
  • Simplicity and conciseness in everything (often people are attracted only by what they understand);
  • Quantity and size (not enough business cards or a small sign will not bring the desired result).

Special thematic magazines and television programs will be a good help for you. You can also create your own website to attract the attention of a larger audience. Groups in social networks will play the same role.

Here, as in any business, in order to make a profit, you really need high-quality advertising. But at first, there will be quite enough budgetary funds. Simple things will help you a lot: business cards, flyers and a beautiful sign. But the best advertising is still a quality service. A wide range and unique products will also increase the chances of success. It is worth considering a loyalty program as well. Many have been successful through social media giveaways and regular discounts for loyal customers.

tea shop business plan

When compiling your own business plan for a tea shop, you must definitely familiarize yourself with the situation in the market. It's worth asking yourself a few questions, such as:

  • Are tea products in demand in my city?
  • Do I have potential competitors?
  • If there are competitors, will I be able to fight them? For what?
  • What types of tea do people in my area prefer?

When you answer all these questions, it will become clear what is the plan for further action. And then you will be able to solve specific problems: choose reliable product suppliers, find a convenient location for the future store, make a price list, etc.

When drawing up a business plan, keep in mind that you can sell not only tea, but also coffee beans. In addition, additional income will be brought by the sale of antique and national dishes for making or storing coffee and tea.

How to make a financial plan? The total amount of expenses for the first time after the establishment of the tea business will be approximately 500,000 rubles. Let's carry out approximate calculations in rubles:

  • rent of premises - 50,000;
  • utility bills - 10,000;
  • technical equipment - 60,000;
  • purchased goods - 290000;
  • advertising costs - 25,000;
  • wage fund - 35,000;
  • unplanned additional expenses - 10000.

As already mentioned, the costs for such establishments are quite small and will quickly pay off. Since the monthly profit is often 70,000 rubles, the full payback period for a tea shop is approximately 1 year.

Tea business - profitable or not?

Is it profitable to open your own tea business today? The answer depends on what you are willing to do to promote it. According to the above calculations, it may take no more than 500,000 rubles to organize and regulate the work of a modest tea shop. Payback is from 1 to 2 years, but only in those points that are popular among buyers. However, it will not be easy to analyze the level of sales, since they are very affected by unstable indicators. For instance:

  • the purchase price for the goods (depends on the exchange rate);
  • personal pricing strategy;
  • store popularity.

Interestingly, the tea sales business is considered by many to be elite. Why? According to experienced specialists, it is this branch of sales that is considered the most profitable in two main criteria: quick payback and high profitability.

What accounts for the success of the tea trade? First of all, a wide range affects. The choice in private stores is quite wide. As for the quality, it is determined by the different degree of fermentation of tea. Fans of this drink can find suitable products on the store shelf for literally every taste. Tea shops are in great demand, therefore, if you think through various nuances and take into account possible risks, they will bring high profits to their owner.

Tea business - reviews

It is not easy to be a pioneer in something. The tea business is different. Many businessmen started out with small stores and have accumulated a lot of tips for newbies over the years. By analyzing the feedback of others, you can clearly understand whether you should do this. Also, the study of business stories will help those who want to become a leader without experience.

Evgeny Mikheev, Barnaul.

In order to be successful in the market and have regular customers, Evgeny constantly introduced new forms of trade and expanded the range of products. Things were going well, and over time it became clear that it was necessary to increase the area of the store, and for this - to change the premises to a new one. “Don't be afraid to lose customers: even if the previous number decreases, thanks to good service and attention, new ones will appear,” Evgeny notes. Then the entrepreneur decided to equip a room for tastings and small tea ceremonies. People liked this idea, more and more of them came. At the moment, Eugene is the owner of the tea club and is trying his best to improve it.

Andrey Sokolov, Bryansk.

Andrei started working with one tea rack, now he has increased their number to five. “I don’t sell alcohol in the tea department, but related products sell well: coffee, utensils for brewing it, tea utensils, even books on a suitable subject. The good news is that buyers of different incomes come, so tea is sold both expensive and budget.” The owner recommends this type of business, as the selected product is in demand both in winter and in summer.

Olga Nikolaeva, Arkhangelsk:

Olga started working in the tea business thanks to the franchise of a well-known brand. First, the owner opened a store that sold delicious teas by weight. Olga also took care of the availability of a cozy room where visitors had the opportunity to taste tea. It is noteworthy that during the crisis, the conditions of franchisors began to change, in addition, wholesale prices rose. The relationship with the original company was terminated, so Olga opened a store under her own brand. She considers her business successful: despite frequent moves from one location to another, the store has a good reputation in the city and is constantly recommended to tourists. What's the secret? "Love and dedication, together with a high image, will make your business prosperous."

In our country, a culture of tea drinking is gradually taking shape. It cannot be said that the majority of compatriots understand the quality of this drink and are ready to pay normal money for it. Drinking tea from a bag is still the dominant position among the population of Russia and other former Soviet republics, but not the only one.

More and more citizens traveling abroad or at least visiting coffee houses, teahouses and other establishments that serve high-quality leafy drink in teapots prefer to purchase the same for home use. In this regard, specialized stores are becoming in demand, which are able to offer a diverse range of really good tea brought from different parts of the world.

It's time to take advantage of the unsatisfied demand and open such a place on your own. But first you need to draw up a detailed business plan. A tea shop, organized according to all the rules and taking into account all the nuances of this business, can become a successful, profitable and rapidly developing enterprise.

Answering pressing questions

The initial task of an entrepreneur is to analyze the tea market in his city and region as a whole. What companies are working? Who is the leader? How many stores does each organization have, and in what parts of the city are they located? What assortment do they offer, what is missing, and what is gathering dust on the shelves, remaining unclaimed?

The answers to these questions will greatly clarify the situation in which you will have to work, and will allow you to take into account various nuances when opening your own Tea Shop business. Next, we will consider the main points that must be included in a business plan.

The first stage - the choice of location and interior

Finding a suitable room with a good location is not easy, but it is possible. Ideal in this case would be a place with high traffic and an acceptable rental price. It is unlikely that your customers will want to go to the other end of the city in order to buy some tea. Therefore, open up as close to them as possible.

It can be a downtown, any busy area with other shops nearby (but not tea!), a department in a large shopping center, or a place near a popular cafe. Usually, though not always, tea buying is impulsive rather than pre-planned. Therefore, you should be clearly visible, and you should want to come in (this applies to design and signage).

Interior design

The tea shop may be small in size, but not cramped either. If there is too little space, then part of the buyers will literally be "screened out" - those who wanted to go in and could buy something, but did not go in because of the people crowding in the store. Be sure to take care of a separate room for the warehouse - enough 7-10 square meters. Tea supplies will be stored here. At the same time, it should be warm, dry and dark inside in order to prevent spoilage or loss of the properties of the drink.

Make the main hall cozy and beautiful, be sure to place tea showcases around the perimeter. Don't forget the shelves for related products, which can increase sales by up to 50%. The most important thing is that customers enjoy being in your store and want to buy something for themselves at home. By the way, the smell of various types of tea contributes to this.

The second stage is the search for personnel

The people who will work in your store are the key to success. As a rule, customers are not very well versed in tea. In the supermarket, knowledge about it will not be useful. But a tea shop is a business aimed at instilling a culture of tea drinking in the population. After all, this is a guarantee of an increase in the number of potential buyers who can become regular guests.

Therefore, the store staff should be well versed in all issues related to the drink: varieties, brewing technologies and methods of consumption, properties and effects on the body. The more the specialist knows, the better he will be able to serve the visitor, the more chances to make him a buyer and make him come back again. In addition, there are quite enlightened guests in this matter. Agree, it is not very good if the buyer knows more about the product than the seller.

Be sure to include labor costs in your business plan. The tea shop functions, as a rule, as follows. Part of the salary is a fixed salary (7-10 thousand), part is a percentage of sales. This will encourage employees to work well and quickly.

The third stage - the creation of an assortment

This point is probably the most important in this business. Tea should be of high quality, and there should be a lot of it. Both criteria must be taken into account and try to comply in the best possible way. You will have to buy tea from suppliers from different countries, because the whole business cannot be built only on a Chinese product, for example.

A medium-sized tea shop offers 50-100 to 200 varieties of tea from at least three to four countries. It can be both domestic (Krasnodar, etc.) and foreign tea (Japanese, German, Indian, etc.). It is best to personally communicate with potential suppliers in order to discuss all issues of cooperation, to make sure of the quality of the drink itself and the reliability of the manufacturer.

To expand the range, you can visit exhibitions dedicated to tea. Both traders and importers-exporters, dealers and other representatives of the tea business gather here. Travel expenses should also be included in the business plan. If possible, a tea shop should offer all types of drink: black, red, white, green, herbal and fruit, as well as a variety of varieties.

marketing plan

A cafe-tea house is planned to be located in the area of office and shopping centers. The main customers will be people aged 25 to 50 years. In general, such institutions are visited by people of all ages. As a rule, these are office workers, business leaders, as well as visitors to shopping centers. It is assumed that the tea house will be visited by people with an average monthly income of 15,000 rubles.

As for competition, direct competitors, that is, other tea houses, are not open in this area. However, there are many other catering enterprises that are serious competitors in the fight for the consumer. These are all neighboring bars, restaurants, cafes, food courts, fast food outlets, eateries, clubs and other catering outlets. The main competitive advantages of our tea house will be: delicious cuisine, high service, stylish design and unique aroma of tea.

How much can you earn from a tea shop

The average traffic of the shopping center, which is planned to accommodate a cafe-tea house, is 5,000 people per day.
