Check Jack Daniels by code. How to distinguish real Jack Daniels from fake ones

What is Jack Daniels - cognac or whiskey? What and how to drink it with? And most importantly: how to distinguish the original from the fake? We will tell everyone about this in this article, and also give a lot of interesting facts about the history and intricacies of Jack Daniel's production.

General information

Jack Daniel's - blended whiskey. Unlike Scottish national drink, which is made from malt, the American variety uses corn (eighty percent), barley (12%) and rye (8%) as raw materials. Such blends are usually called bourbons, and this makes them similar to cognacs. But it’s the special filtration method that makes Jack Daniel’s whiskey. Thanks to double passing through a layer of special coal, the drink acquires soft taste. And four years of aging in charred white oak barrels gives the whiskey a smoky caramel aroma and an amber color. Spring water with zero iron content also gives the drink softness. The whiskey comes in square bottles with sharp edges. On this moment There are several varieties of this world famous trademark. The main difference in types of Jack Daniels whiskey is degrees. In the classic sample - "Jack Daniels Old No. 7" - as well as in "Gentleman" there are forty of them. Other types are somewhat stronger. For example, in Single Barrel there are forty-seven degrees, and in Silver Select - all fifty.

Story

As often happens in the production of some kind famous brand, Jack Daniels whiskey is named after its “parent.” Jack Jasper Newton Daniel was only seven years old when he hired himself as a laborer in the distillery of Lutheran pastor Dann Call. This happened in the middle of the 19th century in Tennessee. Five years of work were not in vain. The boy gained experience and at the age of thirteen opened his own distillery. Daniel did not reinvent the wheel, but applied the already proven method of Lincoln whiskey production technology. This method, practiced in the county of the same name in Tennessee, consisted in the fact that before pouring into barrels, the drink was filtered through a three-meter layer of coal obtained from American sugar maple. This process is long and expensive, but this did not stop Daniel. And although most whiskey lovers do not love it for its soft taste, Jack Daniel’s products have become very popular.

The Uniqueness of Jack Daniels

It would seem that if the manufacturer used the already existing traditional technology, then what made his products stand out from others? Why Distillery Is this brand the oldest currently operating in the USA? Let's answer: because Jack Daniel always wanted to do the best. This was his life motto. He built his plant near his hometown of Lynchburg not out of patriotic feelings, but because he knew about the wonderful Hollow Spring. The water of this source contained virtually no iron. Thanks to it and passing through layers of sugar maple, the drink came out soft, and not overpowering, like ordinary whiskey. The products were also aged for four years in special barrels. They were made from young American white oak wood. After the barrels were completely made, their insides were fired. Jack Daniels whiskey was aged in their natural climate. In winter the wood contracted, in summer it expanded. Essential oils And natural sugars oak passed into the drink, giving it an amber color and a smoky smell.

Modern production

Jack Daniel himself was not married and had no children, and therefore, in his old age, he handed over the reins of the company to his nephew. Lem Motlow ran the distillery from 1911 to 1947. It was a very difficult period. Two world wars, the Great Depression and - which was a particular blow for the company - Prohibition. But Motlow masterfully got out of the situation by establishing exports. The distillery's products even managed to receive medals at European distillate exhibitions. In 1988, new manager Jack Rair introduced the double filtering method. Jack Daniels whiskey, after four years of maturation in barrels, was once again driven through a layer of maple charcoal. This method gave the drink a more elegant and smooth character. At the same time, readiness - the degree of maturation of whiskey - is determined not by a calendar, but by tasting of specialists. The taste, color and aroma of the contents of each barrel are assessed.

Marketing and packaging

Jack Daniel was not only a conscientious and talented whiskey maker, but also an excellent entrepreneur. Even at the dawn of his activity, he opened two bars in his hometown and hired musicians, forming them into the Silver Cornet Band orchestra. He ordered a bottle of Jack Daniels Old No.7 whiskey to be drawn on the drum. The idea worked. The troupe traveled with concerts throughout all states, and soon all Americans, young and old, knew: if there was whiskey, then it was Jack Daniels. Tara also played a role in marketing. At first, Jack Daniel bottled his products into jugs on which he stenciled his first and last name. When, from the seventies of the century before last, they firmly came into use glass bottles, Jack began to look for something original. And I found it. A traveling salesman from Illinois showed him Alton Glass products. The bottle was very non-standard - square, with sharp edges and a corrugated neck - just what was needed to make the house's products stand out and be memorable.

Varieties

Let's start with the classics. Photo of Jack Daniels Old No.7 whiskey in front of you. The classic square bottle contains an amber drink with caramel and vanilla flavors, in which woody notes are clearly audible. The drink is characterized by a pleasant sweetish aroma. This variety is available in bottles of different sizes - from 0.05 liter samplers to three-liter bottles.

Gentleman Jack is double filtered. A taste of it amber drink nuts, licorice and spices are guessed. Available in containers from 0.35 to one liter.

Jack Daniel's Single Barrel is a premium variety. The whiskey is strained into a 0.75 liter bottle from one specific cask, whose number and bottling date are indicated on the label. This is a dark amber drink with a strength of forty degrees. This whiskey has a mild vanilla caramel flavor.

Jack Daniel's Silver Select Single Barrel is characterized by increased strength (five degrees). Whiskey belongs to the super-premium category, since the drink is bottled from a special, best barrel. Dancing orange-red sparkles are visible in the amber liquid. The taste is associated with caramelized citrus, vanilla, oriental spices. The aroma has woody, smoky notes, orange zest And ripe plums. The aftertaste is long, languid, with notes of sweet spices.

It can be served as an aperitif and digestif, but not with food. The Scots drink their whiskey and soda. This method softens the pickiness of the drink. Jack Daniel's doesn't need that. Its taste is already quite mild, which allows it to be confused with cognacs. Connoisseurs of Jack Daniels love to taste it in small sips solo, without any accompaniment. For this whiskey, you should choose tulip-shaped glasses, filling them a third or half full. This way you can better feel the aroma of the drink. Optimal temperature when feeding - plus eighteen to twenty-one degrees. If the drink is colder, it will not exude its aroma, and if it is warmer, the taste will become harsher, more brutal.

If you are against the use of distillates in pure form, try making yourself a simple cocktail. This brand of whiskey goes well with apple and lemon (or any citrus) juice. But you should take another glass for the mixture. This can be a wide, low glass with a thick bottom. It is filled with ice cubes, whiskey and juice. Since this is a “male” drink, any decorations in the form of umbrellas, orange slices and carom pieces are inappropriate here. Even cocktail straws are considered bad manners.

One hundred and fifty years after the brand appeared on the world market, Jack Daniels has acquired medals and strengthened its popularity. The fact that the products are in demand is evidenced by the fact that there are a lot of counterfeits of this brand on the black market. So what should a true Jack Daniels look like? The drink continues to be bottled in “branded” bottles. They are square in shape, with sharp corners. At the top of these edges, near the neck, “Jack Daniels” is engraved, and at the bottom is the container volume (for example, “1 Liter”). The label is glued evenly, without any glue smudges. It has edges beveled at an angle of forty-five degrees. And the label itself, like an American dollar, has convex patterns on the sides. They can be felt under the fingers when stroking. The bottle has a plastic cap, covered with a protective film. But the most important thing is the bottom of the bottle. It must indicate the EI code, lot number and series.

How to distinguish an original from a fake

The manufacturer has invested a lot of money in the production of his whiskey (first-class raw materials, barrels self-made, coal). Therefore, you should not expect that a liter of Jack Daniels whiskey will cost about four hundred to eight hundred rubles. If you are offered a drink in a square bottle but with soft edges, it is not original. This is not Jack Daniels whiskey at all. A fake may also have a metal lid. Recently, bottles with a capacity of half a liter have begun to be counterfeited. The corrugated neck will help you distinguish a fake. For real whiskey, after the inscription No.7, a small letter (R) should be visible. Turn the bottle over: the drop should linger at the bottom and hang. In a counterfeit product, the liquid will simply flow down the walls. Shake the bottle. Real whiskey has large and more or less persistent bubbles. There should be no sediment. An uncorked bottle emits a sweet vanilla scent, while a fake bottle smells of alcohol.

What do consumers say?

Both experts and simple amateurs Distillates are praised for Jack Daniels whiskey. Reviews from Russian consumers especially emphasize that this drink does not cause headaches or other signs of a hangover. If you buy whiskey from trusted stores, you can enjoy a soft, well-balanced taste. The drink is good in any weather: it warms you up on chilly evenings and (with ice) tones you up on a hot day. Connoisseurs warn against drinking Jack Daniel's with cola - the powerful taste of soda does not fit into delicate aroma American whiskey

Founder Jack brand Daniel's consider the priest Denna Call. He was the owner of a distillery and produced high-quality whiskey there. One day he took a seven-year-old boy, Jasper Daniel, as his assistant. The boy, despite his young age, turned out to be very smart, he quickly learned all the intricacies of whiskey making and soon the priest Denn made him his full-fledged partner in production. After the death of Denn Call, Jasper Daniel became the sole owner of the distillery. This is where it started great story the legendary Jack Daniel's drink.

The uniqueness of the drink is that in its production they use additional purification through maple charcoal. Thanks to this, the whiskey acquires a special taste and softness.

Gradually over time, the small distillery grew into a full-fledged Jack Daniel's whiskey distillery. Already in 1866, the distillery was officially registered, and it was the world's first official whiskey production.

Soon the plant was moved to the city of Leechburg, since there were springs with very soft and crystalline water. clean water. Jasper understood perfectly well that the quality and taste properties drink

At first, whiskey was sold in clay bottles with wooden stoppers and the engraving of Mr. Jack. In 1895, a square-shaped bottle was born, which is still used today. These bottles are very convenient to use and transport. The shape of the bottles has not changed since then, only the manufacturer adds additional protective marks to their design. This allows you to protect yourself from counterfeits.

Since 1904, Jack Daniel's has received awards almost every year for the best whiskey in the world at various exhibitions.

The drink's recipe did not change until 1988. This year, the new head of the brand, Jack Reir, decided to change the technology for making whiskey. Since then, the drink has undergone double purification: before being placed in a barrel and after four years of aging through ordinary coal. This gave the whiskey even greater softness and at the same time a special characteristic taste.

The popularity of the brand provokes scammers into counterfeiting, which should not be surprising: the price of a liter bottle of the drink on the Russian market is almost 2,500 rubles. To avoid becoming a victim of deception, you should know how to distinguish real Jack Daniels from fake ones.

Comparative analysis of the original and counterfeit

Forgery is carried out different ways. Most often, fake whiskey is bottled in bottles of its own production - they are far from the branded counterpart. The sticker, cork, and protective shell of a fake drink also have a lot of differences from real accessories. Occasionally, bottling is carried out in branded bottles, but even then an attentive buyer will be able to distinguish a thin fake without opening the container. Next, let's talk about everything in order.

Bottle

The manufacturer packages Jack Daniels in containers that are shaped like a parallelepiped with sharp vertical and horizontal edges and pronounced top and bottom edges. You can notice a fake already at this stage of analysis: its upper and lower edges are usually rounded.

Pay attention to the design detail, which is very difficult to falsify. The original has an easily readable raised logo engraved on the hangers on four sides - Jack Daniels (in words), and on the bottom edge there is a raised inscription informing about the displacement. You can spot a fake Jack Daniel's by its blurry, hard-to-see embossing.

Neck

In the original Jack Daniels bottle, it has a slightly “pot-bellied” configuration, slightly tapering towards the cork. At the bottom of the neck there are rectangular edges of equal width. A fake bottle of whiskey can be easily distinguished by its cylindrical neck with faint rectangles that smoothly turn into shoulders.

Bottom

It should have the shape of a clearly defined square with corners cut at 45°. On the surface of the glass there is embossed, legibly written information for the buyer. A fake is identified by the rounded corners of the square. The next sign of Jack Daniels counterfeiting is a fairly noticeable circle after the pressing machine. It covers up information that is already difficult to read.

Cork

Continuing our excursion into identifying a fake, let’s take a closer look at the bottle cap. Unlike counterfeit, real Jack Daniels will have a black plastic cap with an even cross-section, which, together with the neck of the bottle, is covered three-quarters with a dark glossy film. As for the fake, you can usually see a metal plug with no protective film on it.

Label

Using the Internet, carefully study its updated design to know the exact spelling and size of the text. When examining the proposed bottle of whiskey, pay attention to the neatness of the fastening and the absence of traces of glue on the label. With a corporate design, it is positioned absolutely symmetrically, covering 3 sides of the bottle. Along the left and right edges at the bottom there are clearly visible and tactile corrugations. A fake can be distinguished by a crookedly pasted label and lack of relief.

On original version Jack Daniels does not have a single inscription in Russian, and at the very bottom of the sticker the batch number is indicated - the so-called EI code. The numbers indicate the barrel number and packing date. If, before opening the bottle, you could not distinguish fake whiskey from real one, look: is there a dispenser? Its presence is one of the signs of the Jack Daniels signature drink.

Appearance, smell and taste

Visual and olfactory signs noble drink– dark amber color and aroma with notes of smoke. If you've already tasted Jack Daniels, you're familiar with it. special taste: tart-sweet, with hints of caramel and vanilla. If you notice at least one of the signs of a counterfeit, and after opening the bottle you smell a strong alcoholic smell, you should not risk your health and drink dubious “whiskey”.

Where and how to buy Jack Daniels?

It is better to purchase elite alcohol in a specialized store, where you can calmly check all the parameters and read the accompanying documents. This will be very difficult to do in a supermarket. Nowadays, online trading, including alcoholic beverages, is on a large scale. To avoid receiving a pre-paid counterfeit by mail, make your purchase by cash on delivery and conduct a visual analysis before payment.

Conclusions. How to distinguish real alcohol from fake?

Signs of a fake Jack Daniel's

  1. Metal cover – original Jack Daniel's Available only with a plastic lid covered with a plastic shell.
  2. Round “shoulders” of the bottle – since 2011, bottles have been produced in a new design.
  3. Smooth “shoulders” – the “shoulders” of the bottle should have the Jack Daniel’s inscription in relief on four sides.
  4. “Curved” label – the label must be glued evenly, and the order of the inscriptions on it must correspond to the established pattern.
  5. The presence of a Registered trade-mark on the shell of the bottle neck.
  6. Decor. If the size of the inscriptions and fonts do not cause you doubts, then take a closer look at the accuracy of attaching the label to the bottle. Unlike the original, where it is located symmetrically on all three edges and has a clear relief, on a fake there may be visible traces of glue along the edges of the fastening, and the label itself is fixed unevenly and with no relief. We also draw your attention to the fact that the label of real Jack Daniels contains instructions and symbols only on English language, and in the very corner of the sticker there is a unique EI code, which indicates the barrel number and packing date.
  7. Sight, smell and taste. If a visual inspection does not give you any results, then the last option for checking authenticity is tasting and external inspection. A real American Jack Daniels should have a rich dark amber color with light notes of smoke. When drinking a drink, pay attention to its flavor tones. Remember, an authentic brand should be tart-sweet, reminiscent of the sweetness of caramel and vanilla. And a fake, unlike the original, will make itself felt immediately after opening, emitting a pungent alcohol smell.
  8. Shop. To be completely sure of the quality of Jack Daniels, buy it at specialized stores, where it is much easier to verify the authenticity of the product due to the presence of accompanying documents for the entire batch of alcohol. But we don’t recommend trusting supermarkets.

JackDaniel's is considered the national alcoholic drink of the United States, so only this type can officially be called “whisky.”

The alcoholic drink has a rather interesting backstory. The founder of the brand is the clergyman Denn Call, who was the owner of a winery and produced high-quality whiskey.

Once he hired a seven-year-old boy, Jasper Daniel. The boy, despite his age, turned out to be smart and quickly delved into the technology of whiskey production. After this, the priest invited the boy to become his production partner, and after Denn died, Jasper became the sole heir to the winery. It was from that moment that the history of JackDaniel’s whiskey began.

The exclusivity of the drink lies in the fact that during production it is purified through maple charcoal. And because of this, the drink turns out soft and delicate.

After some time, the distillery grew into a production facility producing JackDaniel’s whiskey. And in 1866, the company gained recognition throughout the world and became the world's first enterprise to produce high-quality whiskey.

After this, the release was moved to Leechburg, because it was in those parts that there were springs with crystal clear water, because the taste of whiskey directly depends on water.

At first, JackDaniel's was sold in clay containers with ordinary wood mashes and the inscription Mr. Jack, and in 1895 a square bottle container was invented, which is still used today. It turned out to be quite comfortable to use and transport. Ever since then appearance bottles have not changed. Many security signs were only added to it in order to avoid counterfeiting.
