Despite the fact that Africa is considered the birthplace of watermelon, the world leader in the consumption of this tasty and healthy berry belongs to Russia. It came to our country somewhere around the 9th-10th centuries and over the past millennium it has become firmly established on our tables. Confirmation of this thesis can be seen from the second half of summer in any supermarket and at any bazaar. Watermelons reign there. It is possible that this only seems due to their gigantic size. But let's be honest. What would you prefer on a hot summer day - a sweet peach or a juicy watermelon? Of course, the second one. We not only cut watermelon when serving it as a dessert, we even salt it, despite the incompatibility of the concept of salting and the original sweetness of this berry.

Despite the popularity of this berry, not everyone knows how to choose the right one and how to cut it correctly. We won’t talk about selection criteria now, since this is a whole science. Moreover, at the end of summer, and even more so at the beginning of autumn, almost all watermelons are already filled and tasty. Let's talk about how to properly cut a watermelon.

In large families, during meals, the head of the family usually cuts the watermelon, giving the household members neat and beautiful pieces. He can do this in several ways.

The most common way is to divide it into slices.

Two circles are cut from the berry, top and bottom, then it is placed and divided into skibs. But since cutting a watermelon in this way, despite the apparent simplicity of the method, is not accessible to everyone, many prefer to do it easier. They also cut off the top and bottom of the berry, then divide it in half lengthwise, and begin cutting it into half rings like an onion. Agree that this is much more convenient. But in this case, not all watermelon eaters will receive equal slices. As everyone knows, the “middle” of a watermelon is considered the most delicious, because it is the most sugary. And with this method, someone will get the “tops,” while others will have to be content with the “roots.”

The same applies to the option of cutting the berries on top into circles. Therefore, it is still “fair” to cut it with discounts. If you cannot cut the watermelon evenly because the knife constantly moves to the side, then divide it into two parts, and then into smaller pieces.

In general, if you bought not very giant berries, then you don’t have to cut them at all. More precisely, we divide the watermelon in half and give each eater a spoon along with half.

You can also peel it like an apple, cut it into cubes and serve it as a dessert, offering to eat it with forks. There is no need to talk about how to properly cut a watermelon in this way - everything is clear from the attached picture. But for some reason this method is not as popular here as in the West.

Actually, to be honest, no one can tell you how to cut a watermelon correctly, since the concept of “right” and “wrong” simply does not apply here. You’re not cleaning a fish, which you’re supposed to start removing scales from its tail, and you’re not repairing an electrical switch, where it’s important for you to connect the contacts in the right sequence. And eating a watermelon, like cutting it, is a matter of taste and habit.

There are many different recommendations on how to cut a watermelon into cubes, bars, regular slices and even stars. At first glance, it may seem that some of these methods are incredibly complicated, but once you try and get the hang of it, you will see the opposite.

Watermelon is not only a tasty and healthy delicacy. This is a whole symbol of fertile autumn, which gives us such generous gifts. It will decorate any occasion, be it a beach party or a luxurious wedding. Unusual slices look especially impressive. But besides a spectacular appearance, convenience is also important. If you are thinking about it, the tips and photo examples presented in this article will help you get inspired.

When thinking about how to cut a watermelon correctly and beautifully, many imagine one of the two most common methods. The first involves cutting into slices, like an orange, and the second recommends cutting round slices from the watermelon, starting from the top, and then cutting them in half. However, there are still quite a few cuts. They also deserve attention.

Convenient blocks

Once upon a time it was customary to cut a watermelon in a circle into equal slices. This method is not very convenient, especially in the case of particularly large specimens. It is difficult to cut it, and eating huge skibs is inconvenient. But recently another wonderful method has gained well-deserved popularity - cutting into bars, with which we will begin our review of methods. How to cut a watermelon beautifully and quickly using a regular knife is clear from the following illustration.

Cut the fruit in half, turn one of the halves over and cut with a sharp long knife, making cuts perpendicular to the board. This watermelon can be served on a wide platter, tray, or plate. It is convenient to take the bars, remove the seeds from them and eat them.

Even cubes

This method is often used when watermelon is planned to be served at a buffet table. You can insert bamboo skewers into the cubes and guests won’t have to get their fingers dirty. Watermelon cubes are often used to prepare snacks, combining them, for example, with feta, cheese, salted salmon, spinach and olives.

How to cut watermelon into cubes? This is quite easy to do. First, cut the fruit into flat round slices, as you would cut sausage. Then cut off the peel. Cut the slice into strips and then into cubes. For this procedure it is better to use a wide, sharp knife.

Figured pieces for salad cocktails and decoration

You may also find other ways of cutting watermelon into cubes or other shapes useful. Using regular cookie cutters, you can get almost any shape you want. If you are interested in this method, choose laconic simple shapes without small details: stars, hearts, diamonds, circles.

Work on a large, flat surface. First, cut a circle from the watermelon, removing the seeds as much as possible. Using a mold, cut out the shapes and let the excess juice drain. These figures can be used to decorate fruit cakes, ice cream, sorbets and other desserts. Watermelon figurines also go well with salty appetizers of cheese, fish, and grilled vegetables.

Special spoon for balls

Once upon a time, we could only see such kitchen appliances in foreign TV series about the beautiful life. Today, a special spoon with which you can cut balls from the pulp of watermelon and melon is available to everyone. You can buy it at kitchen supply stores.

Such a spoon will be very useful for those who are wondering how to cut a watermelon quickly and beautifully. Watermelon balls look impressive in many desserts. Spoons that have two attachments are especially good. Then you can easily get the balls of the right size. They can also be served as an independent snack, placed in a basket or vase cut from watermelon peel.

Ice cream on a skewer

If you think that curly cutting is beyond your capabilities, but you want something unusual, try to master the following simple method. All you need to do is cut the watermelon into triangles and insert ice cream skewers into the rind.

If you like this method, you won't even need to worry about the aspect ratios. Cut the watermelon the way that is most convenient for you, without worrying about it. Bright fruit ice cream will look impressive and appetizing in any case.

Children will especially enjoy these treats. They are not as easy to get dirty as regular large slices, and in design they resemble the ice cream so beloved by children. In addition, it will be easier for you to get rid of the seeds. This idea can be very useful for those who are planning a party for kids.

Slicer for even slices

If you're deciding how to cut a watermelon, methods, explained tips, and special accessories will help you find fresh ideas. For lovers of traditional slicing, a slicer can be very useful.

With its help, you can quickly cut the fruit evenly and beautifully. It's easy to use. Place the washed watermelon on the base, place the slicer on top, grab the handles and lower it down. In order to cut ripe fruit into slices, you will need some effort, but the knives installed in the slicer are quite sharp. They will easily cope with the peel and will not destroy the delicate pulp.

When choosing a watermelon, consider the diameter of the slicer: the watermelon must fit in a circle, otherwise you won’t get even slices.

Knife-tongs and cutting methods

The following accessory is very common abroad. It consists of paired knives that can not only cut watermelon into slices, but also use it as tongs. They can be used to place watermelon on plates.

This knife allows you to cut slices from a watermelon cut in half. They turn out smooth and identical. This device will also help those who are wondering how to cut a watermelon into cubes. To do this, you will first need to walk along the watermelon, and then across it.

Serving watermelon

It is important not only how to cut the watermelon into cubes, balls or shaped bars, but also how to serve it to the table. If you've already mastered simple slicing techniques, you might like the idea of serving watermelon slices in a rind container.

For this you will most likely need the peel from another watermelon. It is difficult to cut the flesh and keep the peel intact.

Carefully scoop out the pulp with a long-handled spoon. Try not to damage the peel. Then turn the watermelon vessel over to drain the excess juice. Think about the decor in advance. It could be a basket or a teapot, a turtle or even a shark's head with an open toothy mouth. For work, you will need both a long, sharp knife and a short one, which can be used to cut out small parts. You can attach various decorative elements using toothpicks.

Watermelon as an art object: what is carving

If you have already gotten your hands on cutting watermelon into shapes, and balls, hearts and stars no longer seem like an impossible task, perhaps you should try something more advanced? Today, such an art direction as carving is becoming increasingly popular. It involves figured carving of fruits and vegetables (and in the case of watermelon - even berries). To work, a carver uses a variety of tools similar to those used by a cabinetmaker. The following illustration shows a work in the carving style, carved from a single watermelon and decorated with branches with small flowers.

In his work, the artist can use layer coloring: the top layer of the watermelon is dark green, followed by a soft greenish crust, and underneath it an almost white layer. These colors are used to highlight the rich, ripe flesh. Of course, such work requires considerable skill, but even for those who are unable to carve, such beauty can be a source of inspiration.

You don’t have to admire the purchase for long - the desire to eat it prevails over visual pleasure. And here the question arises, what is the best way to cut a watermelon. Personally, I use one method, but there are several. Therefore, we will consider all cutting methods.

Method 1. Half and spoon

A very barbaric method. Its essence is that a watermelon is cut into two halves, both halves are placed cut side up and the pulp is eaten from them with a tablespoon. In principle, this method is suitable if the fruit is small in size and there are no more than two people wanting to eat it. But this is very inelegant. You can see for yourself in the following video:

Method 2. Classic

This method is suitable for cutting watermelon before guests arrive. The result is beautiful, even, large pieces.

The “green striped friend” is cut in half along the equator line. Next, each half is divided further in half. The resulting quarters are cut into even pieces and placed on a tray.

Method 3. In a bowl

I use this method all the time, because... it is convenient, aesthetic, practical. The pieces come out no worse than with the classic method.

After washing, the watermelon is placed vertically in the bowl. It stands well in the bowl and is stable. No trays needed.

The top crust, which has a tail, is cut off (do not throw it away!). Next, vertical cuts are made so as to divide the fruit into four vertical parts, but they do not cut to the end, but to the point where you plan to eat. Well, then they cut the pieces along a horizontal plane, rotating the bowl with the watermelon (all this is similar to how trees are cut down to the roots). After the required number of pieces have been cut, the top of the watermelon is covered with the rind with a tail that we left and put in the refrigerator until the next time. Everything is very convenient, simple and clean.

Method 4. How to make a salad

This method allows cut watermelon into small pieces without crust. Very convenient for treating a large number of guests. For this method, it is desirable that the watermelon be strong and have a minimum number of seeds.

The fruit on the tray is divided in half, then each half in half again. The resulting quarter is separated from the crust by a longitudinal movement of the knife, but the pulp is not removed. Then, right in the crust, the pulp is cut into small pieces. The resulting cubes are thrown into a plate or bowl. The resulting cubes are very elegant.

Method 5. Naked

The outer crusts are cut off. Then the fruit is placed vertically and the remaining peels are cut off using vertical movements of the knife. The result is completely bare pulp, which is then cut into arbitrary shapes.

Method 6. Decorative

The watermelon is cut absolutely randomly. The main thing is that the result turns out beautiful. Here is one example of such beauty:

That's all. These methods cutting watermelon the most common and convenient. There are, of course, other methods, but they are either very similar to those outlined above, or are devoid of any logic. Here is one of these original ways:

There are so many ways to beautifully cut a watermelon for a festive evening. Many of them can be done using an ordinary kitchen knife, which every housewife has in her home. But there is a special device that easily and simply cuts the fruit in different ways, beautifully and quickly.

They need to be placed in vases with ice cream, desserts, or simply placed on a dish. Then you need to put it down and cut it vertically with a sharp and long knife into 8 equal parts.

Cutting sweet and juicy “striped berries” for the holiday table

Today there are many ways to cut berries for a large holiday table. Some of them are used in restaurants and made using special devices, others are also available at home.

So, let's start with the simple ones.

They can be made using a regular kitchen knife.

  1. Cut the watermelon into triangles with a rind. To do this, you need to take a large watermelon and cut it into halves. Then put it on its side and cut into thin circles, which are then divided into halves. After that, each of them is cut into 3 parts. You will get 3 triangles with a crust. They need to be placed on a large flat plate and served. This method is suitable for any table and holiday;
  2. How Easily and quickly cut a large watermelon into cubes. To do this, you need to cut the berry in half, then into thick circles, and then divide them into halves. The thicker the width of the circles, the larger the squares will be. Then you need to use a long knife to cut the circles into even vertical sticks, each of which is cut horizontally so that you get cubes. The thinner the sticks, the more cubes you get and the smaller their size. They can be placed in a salad bowl or attached with other vegetables, cut in the same way into sticks. This cutting method is suitable for a holiday table with sushi and seafood delicacies;
  3. How beautifully and correctly cut watermelon into elongated slices. This is the simplest method that is used for home parties. It is suitable for any style of celebration. Large watermelon should be carefully cut into large and thin slices. After this, cut into halves and serve on a large flat platter. You need to eat it by putting it on a plate and dividing it into 3 parts, which you can take with a fork or your hands by the crust. A small fruit is cut into slices like this: rinse the watermelon under water and remove the tail and bottom, then cut it in half with a large and sharp knife vertically and cut into slices. They need to be placed on a large flat dish and served;
  4. There is another method that is used to decorate desserts with watermelon. For cutting you will need a Parisian round ice cream scoop. It allows you to make balls from the berries that look beautiful in a vase with dessert.

How to use a watermelon cutter or how to cut using a device

Many housewives still don’t know if there is a device in stores that cuts watermelons on its own. In fact, there is such a device and it’s called a watermelon cutter. The device consists of a metal circle, divided into a certain number of sectors, and two handles on the sides. The watermelon cutter is suitable for berries of any size.

To cut a watermelon with it, you simply need to place it on a low and stable surface and, leaning all your weight on the handles, move your hands downwards. The berry is cut into even and beautiful slices, and the middle can be cut into flat circles for desserts.

An unusual cut called “Hedgehog” is distinguished not only by its original appearance, which children will definitely like, but also by its convenience. It’s not a shame to present such a cut in the form of a round prickly hedgehog to guests at a children’s birthday party or even at a wedding celebration.

The cut received such a “prickly” name because it owes its external resemblance to an animal. From available materials: fruits and berries, it is easy to form the face of a hedgehog: nose, eyes and paws.

An abundance of wooden toothpicks inserted into the peel will look like needles and at the same time act as a cutlery. A “needle” protrudes from the peel and a piece of watermelon is pricked with it to be eaten.

You can cut watermelon into portions using a special watermelon spoon. Watermelon balls always look advantageous and attractive. In the absence of such a spoon, you can cut the pulp into cubes and sprinkle them with powdered sugar.

Alcoholic watermelon. How to pump up a watermelon with vodka?

Some holidays require adult snacks on the table. Alcoholic watermelon can serve as an original treat. The secret of this snack is that this berry is filled in advance with strong alcohol - vodka. You can use any other type of alcoholic drink, but vodka works best.

Alcoholic watermelon will be a tasty change for those who are already tired of regular alcoholic drinks. The sweetness of the juicy pulp goes well with the tart taste of vodka. The strength of the drink is not felt at all in such a treat and therefore it should always be consumed with caution so as not to quickly get drunk.

You will need:

  • One watermelon sweet and ripe
  • Half a liter - a liter of vodka (depending on the size of the watermelon and its desired strength)
  • Metal knitting needle
  • Large syringe with a needle

The needle is too thin to pierce the thick skin of a watermelon and therefore it is best to pierce it with a thin metal knitting needle. After the hole is made, the needle of a syringe filled with vodka is inserted into this hole and all its contents are injected into the pulp. So you should make “injections” all over the berry from all sides.

  • You can choose absolutely any flavor of tobacco for smoking such a “natural” hookah, but it is best to give preference to watermelon
  • If you are not experienced enough in cutting out such a hookah, electrical tape or adhesive tape will come to your aid, which will slightly help correct the situation

Video: " How to cut a watermelon correctly - 4 ways"

When the table is bursting with harvest, you want not only to preserve it or prepare something tasty for the table, but also to serve it beautifully and effectively. Today we will tell you how to carve a basket from a watermelon - carving is not at all as complicated as it seems, and the video master class will help you do everything exactly as needed.

An unusual and very interesting option for table decoration will amaze not only your family, but also your guests and will be a great way to demonstrate your creativity.

How to beautifully cut a basket: tools

To cut a basket from a watermelon, the main thing is to decide on the necessary tools.

  • Sharp knife with a long blade

The blade should be wide and long enough to easily reach the middle of the watermelon - this will make the job much easier.

The point should also be sharp, triangular rather than rounded, so that it can easily penetrate the crust and flesh at the desired angle.

  • Small knife with a short blade

To create thin small decorative cuts on the handle, we will need a sharp knife that can easily fit in the hand - it will be easier to work with than a large one and the “ladder” will be more accurate.

  • Tablespoon

Useful for removing the pulp when the main work is already done.

  • Ice cream spoon

Using a round spoon we can create watermelon balls; they will be needed for further decoration of our basket.

  • Fine-tip food marker or pencil or masking tape

This additional tool is necessary for everyone who will be doing carving for the first time. Even if it seems that the eye will not fail, it is still better to draw a contour along which we will make cuts.

If you don’t have anything writeable on hand, we’ll use regular masking tape. It will also help define boundaries.

So, now that we have everything we need in front of us, we can start studying the master class and video.

Carving: how to cut a basket from a watermelon (step by step)

Step 1: step-by-step preparation

Wash a watermelon of a suitable size and wipe dry with a towel. We cut the peel from one side so as not to reach the pulp, but at the same time provide a flat surface - it will become a stand.

If the watermelon is not completely symmetrical, choose the flattest place.

Step 2: how to beautifully mark and cut out a handle

Without turning the berry over, we draw a straight line with a marker strictly in the middle; along this “equator” we will cut the rind.

Now we place the watermelon on the cutting board with the bottom down and draw two more lines through the top that form the handle of the basket. The distance between them should be 3-4 cm, depending on the size of the watermelon.

If there is no marker, glue the full width of the masking tape, first parallel to the bottom, then perpendicular to make crosshairs.

Step 3: photo of processing the edge of the basket

Let's start working with a knife. First we cut through the handle on one side, then on the other. The main task is to keep the blade straight and make deep cuts, so it will be easier to remove the pulp.

Now we place the knife at an angle of 45° in the middle of the drawn line or in the center of the masking tape glued along it, immerse it deep into the pulp to the middle. Carefully remove it so as not to create unnecessary burrs.

We place it again next to the previous cut at the same angle, but in the other direction and also deeply cut through the crust and pulp. You should get a triangle. Using such triangles we move around the circle of the watermelon, passing only the wide strip of the basket handle.

Step 4: forming a fruit basket

When all the main cuts have been made, remove the peel quarters.

Now is the time to get rid of the excess pulp. We start by freeing the basket handle. Using a large knife, cut off the flesh from it so that almost no pink part remains.

We carefully take it out.

It is better to scoop out the pulp from the inside with an ice cream scoop - it will make excellent watermelon balls, especially if we are lucky and there are almost no seeds in the berry.

The number of balls depends on what exactly we want to fill the watermelon basket with - different fruits, as in the video, or just chopped pulp, as shown in one of the photos.

Step 5: How to cut a Christmas tree on a handle

Once everything is ready, arm yourself with a thin knife and create a small “herringbone” on the entire handle or its lower part.

To do this, we make oblique cuts 1 cm deep, no more, trim the crust and take out the unnecessary piece. Moving higher and placing the blade at an angle, we complete the job.

For symmetry, we process the other side of the handle in the same way. All is ready!

Step 6: Filling the Fruit Basket

Now we fill our watermelon basket with fruits, strawberries, grapes, slices of peaches and pears, and pulp balls. Watermelon hearts and other figures will also look beautiful - you can cut them out of slices using shortbread cookie cutters.

If you wish, you can decorate the handle with blue and green grapes, pricking them on toothpicks and placing them on the handle in a checkerboard pattern.

But if cutting out a handle seems too time consuming and you are not sure that it will be done smoothly and beautifully, you can create a simple basket from a watermelon.

This method will allow you to get two beautiful decorative fruit stands for your holiday table from one berry.

To do this, we simply mark the middle of the watermelon with a thin line, cut off the sides of the rind to create a stable bottom for each basket, and then start making cuts from the middle, plunging the knife into the flesh as deep as possible, as shown in step 3.

The slots can be very narrow or quite wide, depending on the width of the blade. We also make them into a herringbone pattern.

Having passed the entire watermelon in a circle, we will get two figuratively cut halves. Scoop out the pulp with a spoon and fill it with fruit or watermelon balls.
