What is a huntsman master? How to drink Jägermeister liqueur in its pure form and in cocktails

Other liqueurs, tonics, juices, coffee and even beer.

The strength of the German Jägermeister is 35%, it belongs to the class of bitters - strong alcohol made from various medicinal herbs and berries. All components used to create the drink are kept secret by its manufacturer (the company Mast-Jägermeister SE, located in the small town of Wolfenbüttel). It is known, however, that the liqueur contains licorice, saffron, coriander, cloves, mint, cinnamon, ginger, star anise, juniper, blueberries, as well as other herbs and roots (56 components in total). The taste of the drink is bittersweet; at the first sip, a spicy herbal aroma is felt. The drink is produced in opaque green glass bottles with a volume of 200 to 1000 ml. The date of bottling of the drink is marked on the glass of each bottle of liqueur. The label depicts a deer with a Catholic cross rising above its luxurious antlers. The drink is also recognizable by the black inscription “Jägermeister” on a red background.

To produce liqueur, crushed berries, herbs and roots are loaded into oak barrels (from wood from the Palatinate forest) and filled with alcohol diluted with water. The process of aging alcohol with herbs takes at least six months. The infusion is then filtered and poured into new barrels for another six months to mature. Afterwards, the drink is filtered once again, fixed with alcohol, and caramel and sugar syrup are added. By the way, as the legend says, the bitter also contains the blood of a red deer, but this is rather a fiction to add mystery to the drink.

From the history of the drink

The author of the creation of the famous liqueur is Kurt Mast, who in 1934 revealed to the world a healing infusion designed to improve the condition of the digestive system and immunity due to the abundance of beneficial herbs in the composition. Being the son of the owner of a vinegar and wine factory, Kurt decided to expand his horizons and create a drink that would not only intoxicate the drinker, but would also bring benefits. And he managed to select the ideal combination of plant components and the correct proportions of all components of the liqueur. Already in 1935, the drink began to be produced in a small Saxon factory, where it is still produced.

The name of the drink is translated from German as “Senior Huntsman”. The name of the liqueur is connected with the hobby of its creator K. Mast, a hunting enthusiast. And the image of a deer with a cross crowning its head, the liqueur received thanks to St. Hubert, the Catholic patron of hunters. During his lifetime, Hubert of Liege, who had not yet been tonsured a monk, was wandering through the forest for the purpose of hunting and saw a deer. But the thought of killing a large forest animal was prevented by the sudden glow of a cross above the animal’s head, which was a sign for the future bishop of the Roman Catholic Church. After meeting the mysterious deer, Humbert left worldly affairs, devoting himself to serving God. And after his death he was canonized. Almost 13 centuries have passed since then (the saint died in 727), whether his meeting with the crusader deer was true is unknown. However, thanks to this beautiful legend, each bottle of Jägermeister is decorated with the head of a deer with a towering cross from which rays of light emanate.

Today, the drink is popular not only among Germans and residents of territories adjacent to Germany. In Russia, a life-giving herbal drink is also revered. The price of a 200 ml bottle of liqueur is about 500 rubles and more, the largest bottle (1 liter) will cost 2000 rubles (sometimes a little more). You can also try a glass of the legendary liqueur in the bar, which also serves cocktails based on Jägermeister.

Jagermeister is the famous one, which is produced in a single place in the world, at the Mast-Jagermeister AG plant in Lower Saxony. Its unique spicy bittersweet taste is not accidental; it has been refined over decades. The recipe for the drink is kept strictly secret: it is only known that it contains 56 natural ingredients - herbs, flowers, fruits and roots.

History of the drink

The birthplace of Jägermeister is a wine and vinegar factory founded by Wilhelm Mast in 1878 in the mining town of Wolfenbüttel. In 1934, Wilhelm's son Kurt, who had a talent for creating original herbal mixes, developed a unique recipe for the “hunting” liqueur Jagermeister, which went down in history. Its expressive spice, bitter aroma of herbs, and softness, despite the rather high degrees, appealed not only to hunters.

The symbol of the drink is the head of a deer with a Catholic cross sparkling in its antlers. According to legend, this unusual animal appeared to the extravagant Humbert during a hunt, which the latter took as a sign and devoted himself to serving Christianity. The head of the legendary deer still adorns the Jagermeister label and symbolizes loyalty to tradition and ideals of quality. The packaging also remained unchanged - a flat, super-strong, thick-walled, flask-shaped bottle made of dark glass, which allows for better preservation of the characteristics of the contents.

Composition of Jägermeister herbs and its beneficial properties

Among the herbal ingredients of the liqueur are Ceylon cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, anise, orange peel, licorice, saffron, caramel, cloves, blueberries, juniper, rhubarb, poppy, ginseng - their full composition, together with the recipe, is a trade secret. Each of the 56 Jägermeister components undergoes exhaustive testing, and only the best are allowed into production.

The company positions its product as very healthy - of course, if you drink it in moderation. Thanks to a well-chosen composition of herbs, Jagermeister improves digestion, improves mood, has a pronounced warming effect and other medicinal properties. Initially, they even planned to sell it through pharmacy chains. But the unique taste qualities and pure natural aroma did their job: they began to drink the healing elixir more and more often, and no longer as a medicine, but for the sake of pleasure.

How to drink Jägermeister correctly

There are two options for consuming the product: in pure form or as part of cocktails. In the first case, it is strongly cooled in the freezer (to a temperature of minus 18-20 ° C) and poured into chilled shot glasses. You need to drink in small portions, but certainly in one gulp. Time of reception - either before meals as an aperitif, or at the end of the meal.

A pure product for medicinal purposes (for hypothermia, colds, to improve appetite) should be drunk at room temperature. In this case, it seems less sweet, more bitter and spicy. For the right effect, 20-40 g is enough. In cocktails, Jägermeister goes well with lemon or orange Sprite.

Jagermeister - price in WineStyle

The price of Jägermeister liqueur in WineStyle stores starts from 1,286 rubles. for a standard 0.7 liter bottle. Also in our stores there are gift versions in tubes, complete with glasses.

Good day to all. Today we will talk about the world-famous herbal liqueur Jägermeister. Many people have probably seen a dark green bottle with an image of a deer’s head on the shelves of stores and bars. But not everyone is familiar with the culture of drinking this drink.

First, let's talk a little about Jaeger himself. It is also called bitter or herbal tincture. All these names are correct. Translated from German, Jägermeister means “Senior Hunter”. The deer depicted on the label is a symbol of Saint Uber, the patron saint of hunters.

There are rumors that the image of a deer is due to the fact that the Jaeger contains deer blood. Nothing like that! There is not even close to deer blood in this liqueur. Jaeger contains 56 herbs, spices and roots. The recipe is kept strictly secret. It is produced in almost the same way as all bitters - herbs, roots, etc. crushed, infused in alcohol, and then the resulting blend is kept in oak barrels.

The strength of the liqueur is 35%, its color is dark brown, its smell is very herbal, and its taste is very rich, intense, slightly bitter. Notes of anise, ginger, citrus and cinnamon are clearly audible.

By the way, they say that due to the specific shape of the bottle, it is almost impossible to break it. I haven't personally tested it, but I've heard about it many times. And a bottle like Jaeger’s is very difficult to counterfeit, so there are no counterfeits of this liqueur. Well, here the unique recipe of the drink also plays a role.

And now about the main thing. How can you drink this drink?

Jaeger's most popular serving is in frozen shots. And at the same time, the liquor itself is cooled to -20. Jaeger changes its consistency - it becomes viscous, but its alcohol content is not felt as much.

It is this option that I don’t like - with my sensitive teeth it’s impossible to drink cold drinks.

In second place in terms of polarity is the Jaegerbomb cocktail. In this case, the Jaeger shot is thrown into a glass of beer or energy drink. I like the combination with Redbull. Well, speaking of beer, Jaeger is most often drunk with dark varieties or ales. In my opinion, Guinness and Kilkenny are ideal.

You should not overuse such cocktails, especially if you are new to this matter.

Jaeger goes well with other liqueurs and syrups. I like the Mad Dog cocktail, in which Jaeger is mixed with Baileys in equal proportions. Once I tried a mixture of Jaeger with orange liqueur. I don’t remember exactly whether it was Triple Sack or Cointreau, but it was very tasty.

You can also mix it with tonic, orange juice or add to tea and coffee.

I often see that Jaeger is served with orange slices sprinkled with cinnamon. I'm not very good with cinnamon, so this option is not for me.

The uniqueness of Jaeger is also that it is both an aperitif and a digestif. It can be consumed before and after meals.

And it’s also worth mentioning that I didn’t like it the first time. I fell in love with it over time when I started trying it in combination with other drinks.

Recently in one of the bars I saw such a chic installation especially for Jaeger. The liquor is cooled inside the unit; there is a convenient tap on the side. I couldn’t resist and took a photo of this miracle of technology

Many drinks at the start of their birth pursued therapeutic and prophylactic purposes. One of these drinks is Jägermeister, which was supposed to improve the functioning of the digestive system. But after many people liked the taste of this drink, they began to use it not only for treatment. Jägermeister is a very strong drink with a specific composition, so it is important to know how to drink Jägermeister correctly. There are several such methods, as well as cocktail recipes.

Jagermeister is a strong German drink (35°), which is obtained by macerating herbs, which is then aged in oak barrels. The manufacturer of this drink is Mast-Jägermeister AG, which is located in Wolfenbüttel.

Jägermeister is in demand in many countries, which is why the drink was exported to twenty countries around the world back in the last century. The drink was actively praised by both musicians and those who took part in Formula 1 and DTM. The "Jägermeister" lettering could be seen prominently on the Porsche 956 sports racing cars.

Jägermeister ingredients and preparation

No one knows the real recipe, because it is kept “under seven locks.” What is certain is that it contains water, alcohol, ginger, cinnamon, caramel, sugar, coriander, saffron and others.

Some argue that the liqueur contains deer blood as one of its components, but the manufacturer rejects these assumptions. This version did not arise out of nowhere, but after the group Inkubus Sukkubus sang the following line in a song “with the sweetest blood from a deer’s antlers.” Of course, fans took this phrase literally.

All herbs are collected, dried, crushed and mixed. The mixture of herbs is poured into alcohol, after which it is distilled several times. The finished drink is poured into oak barrels and infused for almost a year. The drink is filtered, caramel and sugar are added to it, and again left for six months to infuse. At the end, Jägermeister is poured into containers that have dark glass to protect the drink from direct sunlight.

Ways to drink Jägermeister correctly

Ice shot (classic)

This method is good for those who prefer to use Jägermeister in its pure form. The bottle is cooled to 18 °C, vodka glasses are prepared, and the drink is poured into them. The glasses themselves are also pre-cooled. The drink is drunk instantly, in one gulp.

Due to the fact that the drink has been cooled, it becomes sweet in taste and very viscous. The alcohol in the drink is practically inaudible, since its smell is actively interrupted by herbs. It is always served before meals.

Warm Jägermeister

They drink it unchilled, in which case the bitterness is felt in it and the aroma of herbs is not so clearly audible. But up to 40 ml of the drink significantly awakens the mood and increases appetite. Jägermeister is great for helping with colds, so this method is especially good for such purposes. But since this drink is very strong, you should not take it in doses of more than 300 ml in one evening. Otherwise, the result is rapid intoxication and the functioning of the digestive system may deteriorate, since the drink contains many medicinal herbs. You cannot mix Jägermeister with beer, because no one can guarantee normal well-being after such consumption.

They snack on the drink with what they are used to, what attracts them. Some take sausages, others take orange and cinnamon, and lemon and salt.

In a variety of cocktails

This method is ideal for those who do not like strong alcoholic drinks and want to dilute them with something. For example, juices, Sprite or mineral water.
