By the way, you need to immediately form the shape of the salad. Some make it an elongated oval (in the shape of a fish), others make it into squares or a circle. It doesn’t matter, do whatever your heart desires.

Now pour mayonnaise generously on top and use a spoon, carefully spreading evenly. But just do not press down so that the salad turns out airy.

Recipe:

  1. Boil the vegetables. Wash beets, potatoes, carrots. Note: Vegetables must be boiled in their skins, so do not peel them. Cook potatoes and carrots separately from beets. Place potatoes and carrots in a saucepan with water and put on fire. Cook for 20-30 minutes. Separately, cook the beets. The beets are cooked a little longer - 60 - 90 minutes (cooking time depends on the size). Once the vegetables are cooked, drain the water and let them cool. Tip: To check the readiness of vegetables, pierce them with a knife; if the knife comes out easily, the vegetables are cooked. To ensure that the beets remain juicy after cooking, drain the water and fill the beets with cold water, keep in cold water for 1-2 minutes, drain the water again.
  2. Boil the eggs at the same time as the vegetables. Place the eggs in a saucepan with cold water and add a little salt to prevent the eggs from bursting. Cook for 8-11 minutes. Drain the water. Recommendation: To make eggs easy to peel, fill them with cold water and leave for a few minutes.
  3. Prepare the onions. Peel the onion. Cut into thin rings. Place in a plate and pour in a small amount of vinegar.
  4. Prepare the herring while the vegetables cook. Cut the herring, removing all the bones if possible. If you don’t have much time to prepare the salad, you can take herring fillets that have been cleaned in advance. Cut the herring into small pieces.
  5. While the beets are cooking, peel the potatoes and carrots.
  6. Take a dish and start layering the salad.
  7. Grate the carrots on a fine grater, place on a dish, and spread mayonnaise on top.
  8. Grate the potatoes on a coarse grater, place the carrot layer on top, and brush with mayonnaise again.
  9. Place the herring pieces.
  10. Place pickled onions on top of the herring, after draining the vinegar. Spread the layer with mayonnaise.
  11. Peel the eggs, grate them on a fine grater, place in the next layer, brush with mayonnaise.
  12. Peel the beets, grate them on a coarse grater and place them in the top layer. Cover the beets with mayonnaise.
  13. Set the salad aside for 50-60 minutes. This is necessary so that all layers are saturated with mayonnaise.
  14. Before serving, you can garnish the salad with a sprig of parsley or dill.

Tip: don't skimp on the mayonnaise! If there is not enough mayonnaise, the salad will turn out dry. But be careful not to overdo it so that the mayonnaise does not overwhelm the taste of the ingredients.
