Restaurants in Prague that are worth visiting. Meet Czech cuisine

They drink it always and everywhere in large quantities - and this is natural, because the beer in local bars is one of the most delicious in the world. As beer fans have noticed, Czech producers have learned to prepare it in such a way that even if you drink decently in the evening, the next morning your head won’t hurt at all. Millions of tourists from all over the world flock to the capital of the Czech Republic not only to see the numerous attractions, but also to taste this divine drink.

So, which of the many drinking establishments in the Czech capital should you visit first when traveling to Prague? We present to your attention the TOP 5 restaurants in Prague.

Stoker (Výtopna)

The Kochegarka restaurant opened on Wenceslas Square not so long ago, but has already earned the love of not only tourists, but also local residents thanks to its unusual method of delivering beer from the bartender to the visitor. This restaurant is entirely dedicated to the railway theme, and is a large hall with several dozen tables, in which a huge electric children's railway has been installed. Here there is everything that is inherent in the railway, only in miniature: stations and stops. Bridges, stretches, interchanges and dead ends.

When a visitor orders beer and snacks, the food is brought to him by the waiter, but beer and drinks are brought in trailer cars by small steam and electric locomotives, which soon return to a small stop near your table for empty glasses. Children are especially delighted with this service.

Address: Vaclavske nam. 56

U Fleku

True beer connoisseurs simply must visit this restaurant. After all, Fleck’s is not just a beer restaurant, but a real brewery. The brewery was opened in the 15th century, and it still brews delicious beer. All rooms in the restaurant have their own original names: “Suitcase”, “Liver sausage”, etc. original beers will complement the Czech cuisine offered to visitors to the establishment. A special atmosphere is created by the orchestra playing in the garden, as well as the antique interior. In general, if you want to not only eat and enjoy the taste of beer for a low price, but also go back in time a couple of centuries, feel free to go to the Fleck restaurant.

At the Bowl (U Kalicha)

The hero of the immortal work of Jaroslav Hasek, the brave soldier Švejk, has long ago turned from just a national hero into delirium. In the historical center of Prague you will find a dozen U Svejk restaurants, and the owner of each of them will assure you that this particular establishment is mentioned in Jaroslav Hasek’s book. However, among them, only one was actually mentioned in the novel - the bar "At the Chalice". The phrase from the book “The Adventures of the Good Soldier Schweik” sounds like this: “We’ll meet at six o’clock in the evening after the war in the pub “At the Chalice.”

The atmosphere of the restaurant will completely immerse you in the times of the beginning of the last century. Antique furniture, a working century-old jukebox, musicians dressed in the uniform of soldiers of the First World War.

The prices in this establishment are not low, however, this stops tourists. Towards evening, crowds of guests from different countries of the world gather here.

Address: Prague 2, Na bojišti 14

At the Bears (U Medvídků)

If you are a fan of noisy places where a large number of visitors drink, walk and have fun, then you are in a direct path to the restaurant “At the Bears”. This is also a pub with history, it was opened back in 1466. In the last century, the establishment was converted into a cabaret, by the way, the first in Prague at that time. At that time it had the largest halls in the entire Czech capital. It is difficult to calculate how many visitors and tourists from all over the world have holidayed here since its opening. It is clear that this place is loved not only by visitors, but also by the Czechs themselves, who gladly come here to relax from daily worries and socialize.

Address: Prague 1, Na Perštyne 7

The Pub

The Pub is a chain of beer restaurants. Another wonderful beer attraction for visitors. Arriving at this establishment, you will see that each table is equipped with its own counter with an individual tap, from which you can fill your own glass. Residents of Moscow and guests of the Russian capital could see something similar in the Zapravochnaya restaurant chain in Moscow. However, the owners did not stop there and moved on. There are boards around the perimeter of the hall that show how many glasses you have drunk; this information is duplicated on all screens located in the hall. Then statistics begin to be shown for all The Pub bars in the Czech Republic. The competitive excitement increases, which further increases the fun.

A resident of the Czech capital, photographer and blogger Zhenya Vetrana shares where to try colorful trdelniki and beer ice cream.

Three years ago Prague became my home, favorite and ideal place to live. Every day I can walk around the city, run into cozy cafes, sit on benches in parks, admire the tiled roofs, feed the swans in the Vltava and stroke the luxurious tails of peacocks. I explore Prague with great interest, I know all the most beautiful places and unobvious secret locations, I write about it here Instagram (@vetrana). The Czech capital is beautiful at any time of the year, but winter has a special charm, and many come here right now. On New Year's and Easter, fairs with sausages, mulled wine and hot trdelnik take place on the streets of Prague - this is not to be missed!

In a gastronomic sense, Prague stands for democratic cafes with hearty food and beer, and not for haute cuisine. Mostly tourists go to expensive restaurants; knucklebone, as the main specialty of Czech cuisine, is also more often ordered by visitors. Locals prefer more modern food, say, steak or chop for lunch. Coffee shops and pastry shops are actively developing, where it’s nice to go in the afternoon between business. In the evening, everyone gathers in pubs and takes snacks. Below I share my list of favorite places.

IF cafe

Address: Tylovo Naměstí 2, Prague 2
Why go: for breakfast, incredible cakes and the best mango ice cream

This is the cafe of the famous Czech pastry chef Iveta Fabešová, author of several cookbooks and owner of two establishments in Prague. She is a specialist in desserts, cakes and a fan of everything French. IF cafe is decorated in the spirit of modern Provence: I am sure you will appreciate the local atmosphere. A large display case with incredible mousse cakes of different colors attracts all attention. I love pistachio and carrot. Throughout the day, they serve delicious European breakfasts with oatmeal, toast with eggs, and salads. This cafe is also very conveniently located in the center: 10 minutes walk from Wenceslas Square and a couple of minutes from the stop of the popular trams 22 and 23, which have a lot of attractions on their route.

Menu excerpts

  • Mousse cakes 85 Kč (~262 ₽)
  • Cappuccino 80 Kč (~246 ₽)

Klasterni pivovar Strahov

Address: Strahovske nadvori 301, Prague, Czech Republic
Why go: beer, beer, beer! And ribs! The most Czech food.

The history of the Strahov brewery at the monastery of the same name goes back more than 4 centuries. The walls of the establishment still retain echoes of medieval mystery, forcing tourists to come from all over Europe in search of this restaurant, because according to the rating of Czech brewers, it has the best beer in the city! For Christmas, Easter, and on the occasion of the new season, special varieties are released here. There is also a beautiful area here and excellent views of the city. It’s great to combine a visit to the Strahov brewery with a walk along Petrin Hill and the left bank of the Vltava.

Menu excerpts

  • Goulash soup 80 Kč (~246 ₽)
  • Pork ribs in beer marinade 370 Kč (~1140 ₽)

Klasterni senk

Address: Market 1/28, Prague 6
Why go: sit by the fireplace and catch the leisurely Czech rhythm over a glass of beer.

This is a calm, quiet beer hall at the Břevnov Monastery. “Monastery Tavern” (as the name of the establishment is translated) is famous for its large portions, a decent selection of tasty beer, and fast and high-quality service. And, what is important, reasonable prices. I love them for their delicious wheat beer, which is brewed in the monastery, salad with physalis and chicken wings. The furnishings here are very simple, but there is a large fireplace that is heated with real wood - it is especially charming in winter.

Menu excerpts

  • Monastic mushroom soup in bread 65 Kč (~200 ₽)
  • Roasted pork knee with wild cherries (1.5 kg) 425 Kč (~1310 ₽)
  • Grilled ostrich liver 115 Kč (~354 ₽)

Cafe-Cafe

Address: Rytirska 406/10 Prague 1
Why go: overeat on cakes.

This is a trendy restaurant in the very center. Here, for example, parties in honor of fashion week, events of Vogue and Elle magazines can take place. Interior - loft and mirrors. But that's not exactly why I recommend it. Some of the most delicious cakes in the city are here. And caramel banana - just a delight! The cake is moderately sweet and melts in your mouth. The main menu includes snacks for wine and cocktails, European dishes like risotto, sandwiches, and vegetable salads.

Menu excerpts

  • Potato soup 79 Kč (~243 ₽)
  • Duck breast in port wine 249 Kč (~767 ₽)
  • Banana Caramel Cake 89 Kč (~274 ₽)

Coffee house "Louvre" (Café Louvre)

Address: Narodni 1987/22, Prague 1
Why go: have breakfast in a historical place.

The Louvre is one of the oldest coffee houses in the Czech capital, operating since 1902. Among its famous guests are the writers Karl Capek and Franz Kafka, and the physicist Albert Einstein, who lived for some time in Prague. It is better to book a table in advance, as there are many tourists. If you come early in the morning, you have more chances to drink coffee and have breakfast at a table in a relaxed atmosphere! By the way, the breakfast menu is excellent: there are several sets, omelettes, yoghurts, muesli.

Menu excerpts

  • Risotto with grilled vegetables 129 Kč (~397 ₽)
  • Pork cutlet with chopped potatoes 129 Kč (~397 ₽)
  • Pancakes with smoked salmon 119 Kč (~367 ₽)

GoodFood

Address: Karlova 160/8, Prague 1
Why go: try traditional Czech trdelnik in different colors.

There are many trdelnik shops in the center of Prague, where they sell the traditional Czech street food trdelnik - butter dough on a skewer. Good Food stands out because they make it in different colors and with different fillings. Photos against the backdrop of the Charles Bridge, which is a stone's throw from the coffee shop, with red or black trdelnik are blowing up Instagram. There are also hearty trdelniki sandwiches with ham or even macaroni and cheese.

Menu excerpts

  • Regular trdelnik 60 Kč (~185 ₽)
  • Trdelnik with ice cream and fresh berries 120 Kč (~370 ₽)

Nase Maso

Address: Dlouha 39, Prague 1
Why go: a paradise for meat and tartare lovers.

If you come during the day, you will find a butcher shop with a display of raw meat and a queue. At the counter they can make you a signature tartare, a pork sandwich, or grill your meat. They use only Czech meat from the trusted supplier Amaso. In the evening, a metamorphosis occurs: a single table is lowered from under the ceiling, and the space turns into a mini-restaurant. Dinner must be reserved in advance.

Menu excerpts

  • Tartarus 195 Kč (~600₽)
  • Grilled sausage 95 Kč (~292 ₽)

SOVA

Address: Balbinova 4, Prague 2
Why go: try new Czech cuisine.

Here they tried to “lighten” the rather heavy Czech cuisine, making it interesting, but recognizable. Mikhail Khmelinin, a Russian chef from the Altai region, is in charge of the food. Dishes are served with show elements: for example, smoked carp salad is served on a tray covered with a glass lid, under which smoke billows. For dessert, a popular dish is dark beer ice cream with buckwheat popcorn, served spectacularly using liquid nitrogen. A more modern and fashionable dessert is “Apple”, which is made using the mousse method using blast freezing.

Menu excerpts

  • Salad with smoked carp, tomatoes and capers 155 Kč (~477₽)
  • Turkey fillet with sweet mashed potatoes 240 Kč (~739₽)
  • Dessert "Apple" 155 Kč (~477₽)

U Prince

Address: Staromestske namesti 460/29 Prague 1
Why go: spectacular place in the city center.

You won’t believe it, but we actually beat the best beer bars in Prague, every single one! It was difficult, but what can you do for the sake of dear readers. Beer in the Czech Republic is excellent and inexpensive, and also not very strong, so even the best beer restaurants in Prague can be visited every day without the risk of getting drunk and going broke. We did just that and today we present to you the TOP 10 beer bars in Prague, which includes both large restaurants and small but atmospheric bars. Sit back, the article turned out to be long and sincere, like a conversation in a Prague pub over a glass of Pilsner.

Oh, it’s not an easy job to write an article after the Behemoth pub!

How was this rating compiled?

It’s no secret that the Internet is full of ratings of the best beer bars in Prague. And even more so, it’s no secret that many of them (though not all) are written as carbon copies based on reviews and other articles. What did we do? We previously studied the ratings of “The Best Beers in Prague” in Russian, English and Czech and compiled our own list of one and a half dozen establishments that most often take prizes or simply receive excellent reviews from visitors. Then we took our list and (hic!) walked around all these pubs with a camera and a notepad so as not to forget anything. We’ve been to Prague more than once or twice; we have plenty of time, so we didn’t run from one pub to another, but allocated a full evening for each of them. Wherein we tried to evaluate not only the taste, but also the atmosphere in these establishments. This is how our rating “The Best Beers in Prague” came into being. So let's drink to the fact that our list of TOP 10 beer bars in Prague will help you enjoy incomparable Czech beer without a headache! You still have to go to the pub tomorrow. And the day after tomorrow too.

P.S.: we will not list prices in beer bars in Prague, because the cost may change, but our rating of “The Best Beers in Prague” is eternal. Instead, after describing each pub, we will provide a link to its official website, where you can always find out the current prices for beer and food. For those establishments that have not yet acquired a website, here is a photo of the menu.

We also note that we liked absolutely all the establishments that were included in our rating of “The Best Beers in Prague”, and all of them are worthy of your attention. It was very difficult to distribute them in places. We remind you that everything in this world is subjective and your rating of the best beer restaurants and bars in Prague may be completely different.

And of course, Prague would not be Prague if it did not have excursions with a “beer” twist. Therefore, you can test the best beer bars in Prague not only on your own with the help of our guide, but also on an excursion in the company of a professional drinking guide:

The best beer bars in Prague: the most objective rating from Uekhali.com

10th place: U Kalicha (“At the Bowl”)

Perhaps the two most famous beer pubs in Prague are “At the Golden Tiger” and “At the Chalice”. In the first, Vaclav Havel and Bill Clinton drank beer, in the second - the good soldier Švejk himself. However, on the restaurant’s website it honestly says that Schweik was more interested not in the beer hall, but in the brothel located around the corner (by the way, the red lights of this establishment had a picturesque view from the windows of one of the apartments we rented in Prague). After communicating with the ladies, Schweik (or whoever was his prototype) dropped in to the Chalice to regain his strength. That's why The beer hall “U Chasha” is often called “U Shvejk”, and also simply transliterate from Latin to Cyrillic - “At Kalich”. Which is not so far from the truth, given the not entirely ideal state of health of the gallant soldier.

But you won’t be full of legends. As for the beer itself, it’s quite decent, but not the best we drank in Prague. Doubting our taste, we took a second mug - this time a light one - again we were not impressed and went to the good old and trusted Fleck. Even the menu in Russian did not deter us.

Oh yes, the fried cheese at Kalicha’s is simply incomparable. But somehow we didn’t come for the cheese.

You may ask: why did we then include this place in our rating of “The Best Beers in Prague that you need to visit?” I think it’s very worth going to the U Chalsha pub, and not just for the beer. Still, this is not just a restaurant, but a real attraction with a literary twist.

  • Prices at the restaurant "U Chashi"(menu in Russian)
  • (our review)

On the façade of the restaurant there are two signs: “At the Chalice” and “At Schweik’s”.

At the entrance to the establishment you are greeted by the brave soldier Schweik himself.

The best beer bars in Prague: What we liked most about the U Chalice pub was the fried cheese and the massive chandeliers in the ceiling.

The Švejk beer hall in Prague is decorated with quotes from Jaroslav Hasek and other smart people.

9th place: Lokál U Bílé kuželky (“At the white pin”)

And immediately a short summary of “White Skittles”. The beer is excellent. The atmosphere is absent. Therefore, only ninth place.

This famous Lesser Country pub is often called simply “Lokal”, which, if desired, can be translated as “Local pub” or “Beerhouse where locals go”. It is located in a beautiful (are there others in Prague?) alley a couple of hundred meters from the Charles Bridge. The atmosphere here, I would say, is not quite familiar to beer pubs in Prague and rather resembles a neat canteen. Smooth white walls hung with letters, a pyramid of clean mugs on the bar counter, photographs and paintings depicting scenes from the life of the restaurant, valiant knights and, for some reason, Michael Jackson create too strict an atmosphere that does not allow you to relax before the third mug.

But if you came here not to grumble about the interior, like some, but to enjoy beer, you will undoubtedly like it. They serve light Pilsner Urquell and dark Kozel, as well as useless something marked non alcoholic. There is no menu in Russian and the staff does not speak Russian, but Kozel is a Kozel, the main thing is to put the emphasis correctly.

A small Russian-Czech dictionary. Delicious beer - Plzenske pivo. Tasteless beer - Klinske pivo.

The local "At the White Skittle" is located in the same building as the hotel of the same name. Perhaps that's why it's too academic for a Prague beer garden.

8th place: Novoměstský pivovar (“Novoměstský brewer”)

Do not order pork knuckle (boar's knee) at Novomestsky brewer! Maybe everything has changed here since our visit, but we absolutely did not like the traditional Czech snack here. And this despite the fact that we visited the Novomestsky brewer even before we visited Ferdinand and U Fleku, where they prepare the best knuckle in the world.

Otherwise, our reviews about this beer are only the most positive. Delicious unfiltered beer with Žatec hops, an interesting ambiance of a real brewhouse, ten beautifully decorated halls, a convenient location near Wenceslas and Charles Square. And generally speaking, Novomestsky Brewery is not just a restaurant, but a small brewery, and underground (in the good sense of the word): the local halls and workshops go three floors underground. Here you can not only have a drink and a snack, but also take a tour of a real Czech brewery - of course, with a tasting. Options and prices for excursions, as well as the menu, are on the official website.

7th place: U Zlateho Tygra (“At the Golden Tiger”)

At the Golden Tiger is a legendary Prague beer hall, located exactly halfway between Old Town Square and Charles Bridge. Opens at 15:00, we were only a minute late for the opening, but by that time the beer hall was already filled to capacity. There were only two seats left free, which we took. But what two places! However, more on that later.

“At the Golden Tiger” is a purebred Prague beer house, come here not only for the incomparable Pilsen nectar, but also for the unique atmosphere. There is nothing to breathe here and nowhere to sit, because of the noise curtain here you need to talk three tones higher than usual, and the density of people of all nationalities and skin colors here is three times higher than on the Charles Bridge on a July evening. And for all this hell - at most two waiters and a virtuoso bartender of the eightieth level, with all their skill they still do not have time to serve everyone on time, and therefore are angry as hell. You already like it, don't you?

And when we were leaving the Golden Tiger, I inadvertently looked back and then lightning struck me: I came last to the pub, and I got the most criminal place?! An overly politicized Russian tourist would hang himself to sit on my chair for even a minute! It turned out that I was laughing at the Czechs eating raw minced meat in the same place where in 1994, Czech President Vaclav Havel drank beer with US President Bill Clinton! Then the writer Bohumil Hrabal, who happened to be a regular at the establishment, sat down with them, and they drank again, and again... In general, the beer hall “At the Golden Tiger” is famous not only for its beer, but also for the fact that two famous politicians were once stabbed here by the collar, and one famous writer did this almost every day.

  • Prices for beer and food at the Golden Tiger(in English)

The Golden Tiger pub is tucked away on such a narrow and beautiful street that we could barely insert the logo of our site without damaging the landscape.

The best beer bars in Prague not only have top-notch beer, but also top-notch bartenders. On tap at the “Golden Tiger” there is an experienced beer master, but even he cannot always cope with such an influx of visitors.

See the photo on the wall? This is Clinton shaking hands with Hrabal, in the middle is Havel. Do you see the empty chairs under the photo? We were just sitting on them. You may be jealous, but we wouldn't.

But in this photo, friends, there is a really cool guy. When a football player parachutes a penalty kick into the center of the goal, it is called a Panenka kick. It was first performed by Czechoslovakia national team midfielder Antonin Panenka, whose photo hangs on the wall. This kick brought his team European gold in 1976.

6th place: U Hrocha (“At the Behemoth”)

Yes, “Behemoth” does not have a centuries-old history. Yes, this is not a restaurant, but rather a pub or a small, not to say cozy, cafe with several tables. Yes, they serve only one type of beer (the incomparable Pilsner Urquell at 40 CZK per glass). Yes, the walls here are shabby and in some places covered with all sorts of nonsense. And yes, it is noisy and there is nowhere to sit. But it's great here!

There is such a hackneyed expression “an atmosphere that cannot be expressed in words.” So we won’t even try to convey it. Just come to the bar “U Behemoth” (“U Grokh”) and you will understand everything yourself. But it’s better to come early - as already said, there is not much space here and in the late afternoon there will be no free tables (as well as window sills and chairs at the bar counter). Verified. It is believed that the regulars of the U Behemoth brewery are proletarians from all countries, as well as the Prague intelligentsia and teachers of educational institutions in Hradcany and Mala Strana. Therefore, you can come here even just to listen to smart conversations about science (talking about politics is prohibited here, as a sign above the bar warns). And it doesn’t matter that you don’t understand Czech: it’s still nice to be in the company of smart people.

Just don’t lean on the pork knuckle here: Behemoth, as you know, has no waist :) And there’s no website either, by the way. Photo of the menu is just below.

The Behemoth Beer House is hidden on a quiet, beautiful street not far from Prague Castle.

Members of the sect of hippopotamus worshipers are in a religious frenzy.

The menu of the restaurant "U Begemota" is not posted on the Internet. It's hanging on the wall!

5th place: Polo

Let us start our magnificent five with a small lyrical digression. Sometimes you can come across the opinion that the best beer houses in Prague are not located on tourist trails, but are hidden in the back streets of the working-class districts of Zizkov and Vinohrady. There are, they say, special beer houses in Prague that are not for tourists; old-timers and connoisseurs only go there, and in the center there is consumer goods for naive foreigners. This is not entirely true. The best beer bars in Prague are both in the center and on the outskirts, and in world-famous establishments we have always met more Czechs than tourists. But the beer in almost all Prague restaurants is excellent, and it is not surprising that local residents value cozy restaurants close to home more. Why go to the center and jostle among the stuffy crowd when there is also delicious, inexpensive beer nearby, as well as always a free table and warm company?

However, we also have no right to ignore the Zizkov region. Moreover, one of our favorite establishments with the simple name Polo is located there. After our first trip to Prague, we generally considered it the best restaurant on planet Earth. Not a single Prague beer map or guidebook will direct you to Polo. This is a true beer hall for locals, many of whom represent Prague's informal youth aged 18 to 80. The speakers play real rock (not pop, like in the Hard Rock Café), and the walls are hung with portraits of legendary musicians who have never been here. But the main thing is that this restaurant serves the most amazing pork ribs in Prague, which are served with outrageously delicious tank beer. In our family it is forbidden to remember “Polo” on an empty stomach.

And it was here that we became acquainted with the magical drink, because of which the folk trail to the best beer pubs in Prague will never grow overgrown. As if it were yesterday, I remember a wonderful moment: plump mugs, flavored with fluffy foam, appeared in front of us. Having carefully tasted the bright, bitter Pilsner Urquell, we bravely ordered a kilogram portion of pork ribs with chili and honey. The weight did not bother us at all: we were sure that the promised kilogram would contain 800 grams of bones without meat. And then they bring us a huge wooden round plate, on which lies half a pork belly, as if it had just been cut from a pig. There is a lot of meat, everything is juicy and appetizing. The ribs were different, part of them (about a quarter) consisted of cartilage - just right for beer. There were two small bowls - with horseradish and mustard - and also a side dish in the form of cabbage and red capsicum. As soon as you tried it, a real fire started burning in your mouth!

When we were putting out the pepper fire in our mouth, we especially appreciated the bitterness of the tank beer. Which in those minutes was almost not felt. Then we ordered another 0.5 beer and another 0.5. The beer was good, and if we left Polo drunk, it was only from pleasure.

  • Polo restaurant menu(in English)

Many Czechs believe that the best beer bars in Prague should be found in Žižkov. We found one of them - the amazing Polo restaurant!

4th place: Ferdinanda (“Ferdinanda”)

Ferdinanda is not one, but two brasserie restaurants in Prague. The first is located in Novo Mesto, the second in Mala Strana. We began to study the reviews and were surprised to see that the Novomestsky restaurant was more often criticized, while the Malostranskaya restaurant was praised. We went there, and we were right, since this particular establishment took an honorable fourth place in our ranking of “The Best Beers in Prague.”

Ferdinanda is a very fun place in Mala Strana at the foot of Petrin Hill. It’s a nice thing to come down here after a walk to one of them and reward yourself with a portion of aromatic beer, the most tender shank and peculiar Czech humor. The menu alone is worth it! Some talking pigs, hungry mice, pot-bellied drunkards who are drinking too much and scolding the European Union... But the main thing here is the exclusive beers that have become the hallmark of this establishment. It's not the ubiquitous Plzeň or Velkopopovice beer served here: at Ferdinand you'll find two types of dark and one light beer from small breweries that you're unlikely to find anywhere else in Prague.

In addition to the magical beer, Ferdinand serves no less wonderful pork knuckle.

Some walls in Ferdinand are plastered, others are trimmed with rough stone, which gives the restaurant a special charm.

3rd place: Pivovarský dům(“Brewing House”)

This aristocratic establishment, a stone's throw from Charles Square, opened almost yesterday - in 1998 - but has already managed to gain an excellent reputation among locals and tourists. The restaurant has a brewery that creates several types of exclusive and very tasty beer., from classic light and dark to exotic ones like cherry, nettle and even banana. You can try all this pampering at one time by ordering a “beer carousel” - they will bring you a wooden turntable with small glasses with different types of beer. We liked the nettle one the most. And you?

The Brewery House is not just a pub, but a real restaurant in the best sense of the word. There is no smoking or yelling here, the most exquisite dishes of Czech cuisine are prepared here, the waiters here speak Russian, families and children come here. There is also a very beautiful interior, exquisitely decorated with antique rubbish, and in the middle of the hall there are beer cauldrons in which a delicious drink is prepared. By the way, one of the varieties is called Russian Imperial Stout - a clear nod to our tourists, of whom there seem to be the most of them here.

2nd place: U Fleků (“U Fleku”)

The Prague brasserie U Fleku is a real Hofbrauhaus with a Czech accent. This is a large restaurant with large rooms, large tables, large portions and large trays filled with beer mugs filled to the brim. The waiters walk around the hall with these trays, and as soon as you empty your mug, they immediately throw in a new one. They only serve one type of beer, but what kind! Black as a southern night, rich as mercury in the laboratory of a Prague alchemist, tasty as... Like beer in the U Fleku restaurant! Local brewers are proud of this divine drink with a hint of caramel and have kept its recipe a closely guarded secret for centuries. By the way, The U Fleku beer hall is considered the oldest in Prague, it opened in 1499!

To make your trip to the U Fleku beer hall a real celebration, an accordion player will entertain guests in each room. A cheerful musician walks from table to table, listens to conversations and, catching notes of a familiar language, hurries to please the guests with his native melody. A man with an accordion entertained us with “Moscow Evenings” (how did he know where we were registered?) and “Katyusha”; for the English-speaking guests, Yesterday burst out and, it seems, something from early Marilyn Manson. The accordion player accepts the tip with joyful surprise, as if for the first time in his life, further fueling the cauldron of general fun.

  • Beer restaurant "U Fleku" and its terrible secret

The best beer pubs in Prague are famous not only for their drink, but also for their atmosphere. At the restaurant "U Fleku" she is simply amazing!

“God gave us beer and pork knuckle, and the devil gave us compote and vegetarianism!” A wise monk's instructions to tourists, depicted on the wall of the U Fleku brewery.

1st place: Zlý časy (“Hard Times”)

Yes, we are not original and we are not afraid of it. Foreign tourists and Prague old-timers, academics and street cleaners, sophisticated gourmets and bitter drinkers - many of them agree that the Evil Hours is the best beer hall in Prague. We wanted to stand out and put something more original in the first place in the ranking of “Best Beers in Prague”... But as soon as we came here, we immediately understood everything. I’m sorry, Fleck, and you, too, forgive Ferdinand and the Brewery House (and you, Kalich, don’t have to forgive, we don’t care). You are beautiful, no doubt about it, but you can’t argue with the facts: the best beer hall in this part of the Galaxy is hidden in the non-tourist district of Prague 4, in a clumsy building with crumbling plaster under a strange sign in the form of a stupid clock.

Quite an angry watch, it must be said. And the atmosphere here matches it. There are no waitresses flitting around here and no musicians playing. Here you can gloomily throw yourself out of grief and cheerfully celebrate the happiest event in your life. “Evil Hours” is an ideal symbiosis of a common pub and a good restaurant, where every detail says one thing: they came here to drink beer. Oh yes, about beer. By my count, Hard Times offers about a million (give or take) beers. There is draft, bottled, local and foreign food from German brouhaus, Belgian monasteries and generally from all over the planet. But The main pride of the “Evil Hours” is carefully selected exclusive masterpieces from small Czech breweries

This building has clearly fallen on hard times.

Every year tourists flock to Prague to enjoy its historical heritage, majestic architecture, and national cuisine. The location of the Czech Republic influenced the formation of culinary traditions. Over the centuries, Czech food culture has developed under the influence of German-Austrian cuisine in the west, Hungarian cuisine in the south and Slavic cuisine in the east. From the western part, sausages and cabbage dishes came to Czech cuisine, from the southern part - soups and goulash, and from the east - porridge and flour dishes. There are many establishments with original cuisine, so it’s difficult to choose where to eat deliciously and inexpensively in Prague.

What national dishes are worth trying?

At first glance, it seems that Czech cuisine is too simple. It consists of meat and poultry dishes, potatoes and dough products. These delicacies go perfectly with the main drink in the Czech Republic - beer. The Czechs themselves say that their national cuisine is based on the trinity of “meat-dumpling-beer”.

Soups occupy an important place in national cuisine. Czechs love thick, rich broth-based soups and puree soups with a sweet and sour flavor due to the addition of cabbage, sour milk or apples. Most visitors are delighted with soups in bread.

Traditional Czech soupsDescription
Bramborova polevka or bramborackaThick potato soup with your choice of smoked meats or mushrooms. Sour cream and flour are used for dressing. Served most often in bread.
Gulasova polevkaGoulash soup. The soup is based on beef, pork and poultry (sometimes rabbit). In addition to meat, chicken or duck giblets are sometimes added to the soup. Served in bread.
Cesnekova polevkaGarlic soup. The thickness of the soup is achieved by adding beaten eggs. There is also a thin version of this soup available without eggs.
Koprova polevka
Dill soup with sour milk, to which sour cream and a lot of herbs are added. It is considered an effective hangover cure.
Cibulova polevkaOnion soup with cheese and slices of dried bread. The basis of the soup is meat broth, and the onions are fried in lard.

Boar knee, ribs in honey and svichkova are popular second courses of national cuisine. Thus, Czechs prefer meat dishes with side dishes for main course.

Traditional main coursesDescription
Roasted pork knee (Pecene veprove koleno)The dish is prepared from pork knuckle. The traditional recipe involves first boiling it in broth or beer with the addition of onions, garlic and seasonings, and then grilling it.
Baked pork ribs in honey (Pecena veprova zebirka v medu)
The main thing in this dish is the honey-based marinade. Before baking the ribs, they are thoroughly marinated.
Vepro-knedlo-zedlo
The dish consists of baked pork, dumplings and cabbage. Before serving, pour the dish generously with gravy.
Svickova na smetane
This is stewed young beef (tenderloin) with sauce. The first stage of preparation is placing the meat in the marinade for 2 days. The sauce is stewed vegetables in meat broth with the addition of cream or sour cream.

Czechs' favorite main courses are also fried breaded pork chop, baked pork liver, beef goulash with dumplings, baked duck or goose, lamb with rosemary, baked carp or trout.

We should also talk about Czech side dishes. Side dishes are divided into 2 parts - dumplings and everything else.

Every self-respecting housewife in the Czech Republic knows how to cook at least 3 types of dumplings - potato, bread and sweet.

Each Czech region has its own special method of preparation. But the general thing is that dumplings are cooked by steaming or boiling water, and consist of a dough-like mass of various ingredients. Due to their inexpressive taste, dumplings absorb all the flavor nuances of the main dish.

Traditional side dishesDescription
Bramborova caseMashed potatoes. It complements meat dishes with thick sauces well.
Bramborove hranolkyCzech variation of French fries.
CroketyDeep fried potato balls. May have other forms.
Dusene zeli (stewed cabbage) and Dusene kysane zeli (stewed sauerkraut)The basis of the side dish is sauerkraut. Can be served separately as a dish. Pairs best with knuckle, baked ribs and ducks.
Fazolove luskyGreen beans, boiled or stewed.

Czech cuisine also includes traditional beer snacks. - a centuries-old tradition that visitors gladly support. The snack has only two goals: emphasizing the subtle taste of the drink and creating thirst for ordering the next glass.

Traditional beer snacksDescription
Pickled hermelin
Translated into Russian, hermelin means ermine.” This is a type of soft, fatty cheese with white mold. The cheese tastes like French Camembert. The appetizer is prepared for 2 weeks in a marinade made from vegetable oil and spices. The cheese gets its exquisite aroma from onions, garlic, allspice and black pepper, thyme, chili peppers, bay leaves and feferoni peppers.
UtopiansThese are fatty meat sausages that are marinated for two weeks. Afterwards they are served by cutting them lengthwise and placing into the cut slices of tomatoes, pickled onions, sweet peppers, pickled cucumbers and pepperoni peppers.
Olomouc cheesecakesRipening curd cheese, which has a unique taste and smell. Recommended for consumption with toast with butter.

Beer establishments in Prague

The first brewery in the Czech Republic was opened in 1087. In those days, according to tradition, beer producers tasted their competitors' drinks: if the drink was not to their taste, it was spilled on the ground in the square, and the producer was beaten with rods.

Since the Middle Ages, beer has been considered a symbol of the country.

And a thousand years later, in the capital of the Czech Republic there are beer bars and restaurants on every corner. Their number is so large that it is difficult for a traveler to make a choice where to go.

Finally

The Czech Republic and its capital Prague are not considered a gourmet paradise like France or Italy. But at the same time, local restaurants and cafes offer travelers hearty, tasty and inexpensive meals of Czech national cuisine. Portions in Prague, as throughout the Czech Republic, are huge, and prices are moderate.

Prague is famous for its freshly brewed beer, which is pleasant to taste with a selection of traditional snacks. In Prague, establishments are rarely open day and night, so it is better to find out their opening hours in advance. And in popular establishments it is better to book a table in advance.

In this article we will describe chain restaurants in Prague. This article will be useful for those who are traveling to the Czech Republic for the first time, as well as for those who have already been here and want to explore new catering establishments. In this post I will describe international fast food restaurants and local chain restaurants where you can try delicious Czech beer and national cuisine.

Fast foods

In this category I included fast food restaurants of international chains and local brands. Someone might say that ugh, fast food is disgusting; in the Czech Republic it is better to go to local restaurants. However, if you spend only a couple of days in Prague, if you are not tempted by the local, rather greasy cuisine, or there are no other places to eat on your route, for example, on the highway, then you have a direct route to Fast Food.

In addition to saving time, in international fast foods you will always find dishes prepared from high-quality ingredients and in purity, and you definitely won’t get poisoned from them :)

s– McDonald’s needs no introduction, because it is the most famous fast food restaurant chain in the world. McDonald's in Prague can be found everywhere: in the center, near Charles Bridge, on, in. In Prague there are both McDonald's open from early morning until 21:00 and 24-hour McDonald's. Their assortment is the same as anywhere else in the world: in the morning - breakfast, and the rest of the time - various burgers and drinks. Some may say that this is a very unhealthy food, but at McDonald's you can buy salads and Wraps - these are pita breads in which chicken pieces with lettuce are wrapped, a rather dietary thing. When ordering, you may be asked: with a Menu or Without a Menu. If you say with a menu, it means that they will sell you a burger with fries and a drink, if without a menu, then they will sell you only a burger. McDonald's has its own McCafé coffee shop, where, in addition to various coffees, you can buy desserts. The cost of a lunch of a large burger with a drink is approximately 100 CZK (4 Euros).

KFC- American fast food, the specialty of which is fried chicken in a proprietary secret breading. By the way, the breading recipe is kept in the strictest confidence. KFC clients' favorite treat is a bucket of chicken wings. If we look into this establishment, we take Qurrito or Twister. Twister is a dish like shawarma, i.e. pieces of chicken and salad are wrapped in pita bread, and there is much more chicken here than in Wrep at McDonald's. Qurrito is a delicious signature quesadilla priced at 100 CZK (4 Euro). A bucket of wings for 4 people costs 400 CZK (16 Euro), but there are options for how to arrange the buckets. There seem to be fewer KFC restaurants than McDonald's, but they are all located in places popular among tourists and local residents: shopping centers, the center of Prague and exits from the city. There are a total of 27 restaurants of this chain in Prague.

BurgerKing is another chain of American fast food restaurants that are represented in Prague. The assortment in the cafe is typical for fast food: burgers, fries, cola, salads. For my taste, the food at Burger King is so-so, and several times I even got heartburn from their food. Burger King can be found in Prague shopping centers and near central squares.

Subway is a famous fast food restaurant chain that specializes in sandwiches or, as we like to call this dish, sandwiches. There are approximately 45 thousand Subways operating in the world. I don't quite understand this establishment, because... you take a simple baguette, put salad, sausage, cheese on it, and sell it for the price of a normal dish, for example, in Prague for that money you can go to. In addition, Subway likes to ask customers a lot of questions about the filling of the sandwich, which makes tourists confused. I frankly don’t like this establishment, just like the food there; it’s better to go to KFC or McDonald’s.

BageterieBoulevard is a Czech fast food chain that specializes in making baguettes with a variety of fillings - from simple baguettes with sausage and cheese to more complex ones, such as baguettes with Caesar salad. In addition to baguettes, customers are offered salads, soups, drinks, snacks, etc. There are 15 branches of this network in Prague, and they are located in busy areas, shopping centers and in areas where a large number of offices are located. Recently, Bageterie Boulevard began to expand its network and enter the markets of Germany, Poland and the Middle East. We ate at this baguette only once, and we didn’t like the taste of the baguettes, although I know people who like this establishment.

BurritoLoco– Czech chain of fast food restaurants serving Mexican cuisine. In total, 8 restaurants of this chain are open in Prague. The main feature of this network is its 24/7 service, any day of the week. And, since, naturally, these restaurants are popular, especially among nightlife lovers. On the menu you will find typical Mexican dishes: quesadillas, burritos, tacos made from various meats. The food at Burrito Loko is not very cheap: the average price of a dish is 150 CZK (6 Euro), but everything is filling and tasty.

Nordsee is a German fast food restaurant chain that serves fish and seafood dishes. The fish here is excellent and you can have a quick bite to eat. Among the dishes, I especially like breaded shrimp, which go great with beer. All products used in cooking are fresh and of good quality. The restaurant menu includes the following dishes: breaded fish fillet, red fish sandwich, fish bagel, breaded shrimp with a very tasty sauce, grilled salmon, shrimp salad, fish sandwiches. There are 4 Nordsey restaurants in Prague, all in shopping centers: Palladium, Arkády Pankrác, Nový Smíchov and Palác Flóra.

HardRockCafe– a famous American restaurant where you can taste delicious cocktails, eat American food and listen to music. As you know, this is a very atmospheric place, and lovers of rock and quality music try to visit this restaurant in different parts of the world. We've been to Hard Rock in Pattaya, Muich and Prague, all had excellent service and local bands performed great hits. Drinking and eating in a restaurant is expensive when compared to other establishments in Prague. The price of a burger or main dish is no less than 350 CZK (13 Euros), cocktails such as Daiquiri, Margarita, Pina Colada also cost about 13 Euros.

TGIFriday's is a famous and beloved restaurant chain from America. This is truly a restaurant that serves excellent ribs, steaks, and big burgers. I also like the cocktails here. The cost of steaks is approximately 500 CZK (19.5 Euros), the cost of burgers and cheeseburgers is 395 CZK (15 Euros), cocktails cost 140-160 CZK (5.5 - 6 Euros). There are 2 Fridays in Prague: one on Andele, the other in the center on Na Prikope Street.

Hooters is an American restaurant that is famous for its waitresses. For those who don’t know about this place, I’ll tell you. The main feature of this establishment is the waitresses, who are dressed in sexy shorts and T-shirts. Naturally, there are other requirements for the girls, they must be beautiful, thin and have decent curves in certain places. There are 2 restaurants of this chain open in Prague. The price of some items from the menu: shrimp 20 pieces 479 CZK (18 Euro), quesadilla 189 CZK (7.5 Euro), burgers 239 CZK (9.5 Euro), grilled ribs 300 grams 249 CZK (10 Euro), cocktails 99 -125 CZK (4 - 5 Euro), beer 60 CZK (2.5 Euro).

Pizza Hut

A couple of years ago, a pizzeria of the famous American chain Pizza Hut finally opened in Prague. You can find these restaurants in the following places: food court of the Palladium shopping center, Vodičkova 791/39, Galerie Nové Butovice shopping center, Chodov shopping center. On the Pizza Hut menu you will find different types of pizzas, chicken wings, and Caesar salad. Fast food prices are not low; a pizza will cost about 200 CZK. In principle, for this money you can go to an Italian pizzeria and get more pleasure.

Coffee shops

Every year there are more and more gelaterias in Prague, but fans of chain places will prefer to go to some Starbucks, so it’s worth mentioning chain coffee shops.

CostaCoffee is a British coffee chain that has already opened more than 3,000 coffee shops around the world. The coffee shop's assortment is standard: sweets, cookies, light sandwiches, muffins, cakes and high-quality coffee. I like Costa Coffee better than Starbucks because... These coffee shops are more soulful and cozy.

Starbucks is perhaps the most famous chain of coffee shops around the world, easily recognizable by its green mermaid logo. Starbucks has millions of fans all over the world, and it was from Starbucks that the fashionable feature of writing the customer's name on a mug began. The coffee they make here is excellent, and when ordering you will always be asked what kind of coffee you want, the degree of roasting of the beans, the size of the mug, and where you will drink the drink - in a cafe or take it to go.

Paul is a chain bakery from France that opened at the end of the 19th century. These bakeries are not very cozy, but you can take a break in them while walking around the center of the Czech capital. Here is an approximate composition of the menu: various breads, French-type cakes, strudel, macaroons, croissants with various fillings, including sausage and cheese, yoghurts, sandwiches, tea, coffee, baguettes with various fillings, pastries. The price of one cake is approximately 75 CZK (3 Euro).

Amorino is a chain gelateria whose cafes are open in America, Dubai, Korea, Spain and 30 other countries. According to the advertisement, this gelateria uses only natural ingredients and products of the highest quality. Gelateria Amorino is located near the Charles Bridge, and guests of Prague love it. To be honest, the ice cream in it seemed so-so to me; in Italy it is much tastier.

Czech chain restaurants

Now it's the turn of Czech chain restaurants. Some of these restaurants specialize in preparing good Czech dishes, others have chosen a more modern format. You can read more about restaurants serving national dishes in the post.

Kolkovna– my favorite chain of restaurants serving Czech cuisine. In all restaurants of the chain you will find the freshest Czech beer. The most popular beer here is the dark Kozel, which can be poured into a liter mug, as is customary, for example, in Germany at Oktoberfest. It is worth noting the cleanliness of the restaurant and the quality of the prepared dishes. Most recipes for traditional dishes are slightly modified and adjusted to a modern style. Therefore, there will be no very fatty dishes or smelly, sticky sauces here. Usually at a restaurant I order signature chicken wings, pork ribs, schnitzel or an assortment of homemade sausages. In total, there are 11 restaurants of the Kolkivna chain, 2 of them are open in Slovakia and 1 in Kazakhstan.

Kozlovna is a chain of restaurants throughout the Czech Republic that specialize in serving Kozel beer. Kozel, in my opinion, is the most delicious beer among the popular Czech varieties. In total, there are 33 Kozlovnys open in the Czech Republic, and all of them we visited had delicious food, excellent beer and very friendly service, and we were in four Kozlovny in Prague, in Kozlovny in the city of Pisek and in Kozlovny at the Kozel brewery. On the menu, every visitor will find something tasty for themselves, for example, they serve chicken wings, burger, Rib eye steak, Old Bohemian goulash, roast pork with cabbage, pork knee, sausage mix, roast duck, etc.

PotrefenaHusa is a chain of restaurants of the Staropramen brewer, where, in addition to traditional dark and light beers, you can try unfiltered Staropramen or Hoegaarden, Velvet, Granát beer. The service in the restaurants is good, the restaurants are clean, and the dishes are prepared in a modern manner. There has never been a time when an ordered dish in any Huss was poorly prepared. I usually order one of the following dishes at a restaurant: Caesar salad, schnitzel, svickova or salmon steak. In autumn, the restaurant has a seasonal offer that includes game dishes such as wild boar or fallow deer. I’m not a fan of Staropramen beer, I would even say that I frankly don’t like it, but the Potrefen Hus restaurant chain is worth a visit.

PragueBeerMuseum– when we first moved to Prague, there was only one Beer Museum in the city, but now there are already 3 establishments of this chain. The Beer Museum is not a museum, but a pub, which always offers a large number of beers from little-known breweries. Here you can taste craft ales, IPAs, rare lagers, and wheat beers. It’s definitely not worth going here for the food: there are few dishes prepared here, and they are not very tasty, but lovers of exclusive beer should definitely stop by here. There are a total of 3 pubs of this chain open in Prague.

Tom'sBurger- chain burger restaurant. If you like burgers made from good meat, then check out this place. I really like the burgers here. On the menu you can choose burgers with different toppings, with different sauces, such as BBQ sauce, jalapenos, chicken burger or veggie burger. The advantage of the burger joint is that the beer they offer is from small breweries. It is clear that the owners approach the design of the establishment and the food and drinks offered with soul. All the beers I tried here were delicious.

Pizzerias and Italian restaurants

If you don’t like fast food or you’ve come to Prague for a long time and you’re tired of Czech food, then you should pay attention to Italian restaurants and. True, for the most part I don’t like chain Italian restaurants in Prague - I prefer to go to family Italian pizzerias.

Vapiano– a chain Italian restaurant originally from Germany. The Vapiano restaurant chain has already opened throughout Europe and is famous for its fast preparation of dishes and high-quality ingredients. The trick of the restaurants is the following - they give you a card at the entrance, and with it you place an order in the kitchen and bar, after ordering you are given a transmitter that will signal when the dish is ready. Payment is made upon leaving the restaurant. We ate pizza and pasta here - everything was more than decent.

PizzaColoseum- a network of Czech pizzerias that are scattered throughout the city. I don't like this network because... The dishes here are not very tasty, the tomato sauce for pizza is often very sour, and the pasta is cooked so-so. It’s just that when you can’t find empty seats in restaurants anywhere in the center, you can look here.

Grosseto- a chain of Italian restaurants in Prague. These restaurants try to locate in areas where people with money are located. I have been to three restaurants of this chain: Grosseto in Vinohrady, Grosseto in Prague 4, Grosseto in Pruhonice, in most of them I did not like the food and service, however, Grosseto in Prague 4 always pleases - it has pleasant waiters and delicious dishes.

If I missed the description of a chain restaurant or cafe, you can write about them in the comments, and I will definitely add them to the article.
