SALT DOUGH TOYS

HOW TO MAKE THE DOUGH

You will need: extra salt, wheat flour, vegetable oil, water, large bowl, glass and tablespoon.

Pour 1 cup salt and 1 cup flour into a bowl and mix the salt and flour with a tablespoon. Then pour in 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and half a glass of water, mix with a spoon and knead with your hands until smooth, just like regular dough. Water can be replaced with starch jelly, then the mass will be much more plastic.

Kissel is made like this:
Dissolve 1 tablespoon of starch in 1/2 cup of cold water. Heat another 1 cup of water in a small saucepan until it boils. Pour the starch solution into boiling water, stirring. When the contents of the pan thicken and become transparent, turn off the heat. Let the jelly cool and pour it into the flour and salt mixture instead of water.

The dough may be too soft. Then proceed as follows: mix a tablespoon of flour with a tablespoon of salt at the bottom of a bowl. Press the ball of dough into this mixture and then scrunch it up. Do this until the dough becomes more dense.

Place the resulting mixture in a plastic bag and place in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours. After this, you can sculpt from the dough. If you still have dough left after modeling, store it in the refrigerator in a plastic bag.

COLORED DOUGH

Part of the modeling mass can be left unpainted (it has a light beige color), and part can be painted in different colors using gouache paints. If you sculpt from colored dough, you won't have to color the finished products. This is especially important if small children are sculpting, for whom it is still difficult to accurately hit a certain place with a brush.

So, you will need unpainted salt dough and a set of gouache or acrylic paints. Paints must be in a paste form. If they are dry, add a little water to the jars and wait until the paint softens.

Take a piece of dough in your left hand, such that it fits freely in your fist. Make a dimple in the middle of this piece. Using the index finger of your right hand, scoop a piece of paste from the jar and place it in this recess.

Pinch the edges of the dent so that the paint is inside.

Roll the ball of dough up and down between your palms. Your hands will get a little dirty, but it doesn’t matter - the paint can be easily washed off with water. To prevent the dough from sticking to your hands too much, moisten them with sunflower oil.

After rolling out a long sausage, fold it in half and roll again. Repeat this operation until the “marble” stains disappear and the color becomes uniform. If after adding paint the dough becomes too soft, add a little salt and flour to it.

Prepare a set of colored mass in this way. Leave part of the dough uncolored - it will act as white. Store each color of dough in a separate plastic bag or yogurt jar with a tight-fitting lid.

Pieces of colored dough can be mixed, like paints, and achieve the shade you want. To do this, simply take 2 pieces of dough and knead them together until the dough becomes smooth.

green + red = brown
green + blue = emerald .

And don't forget to stock up on flesh-colored dough! To make this dough, add a little yellow to the light pink.

The excess colored dough that remains after modeling can be mixed into one lump so that it does not dry out. The result will be an “incomprehensible”, most likely gray-brown, color. But he can also be useful for something.

GOLD AND SILVER DOUGH

Gold and silver dough - what a luxury! And it’s very simple to make: mix gold or silver paint (gouache or acrylic) into the dough in the same way as you did with regular paint. Stationery stores also sell glitter gel for gouache. It is good to add it to the dough along with gold paint.

WORKPLACE AND TOOLS

In order to sculpt from dough, you don’t need much.

Firstly, the table. It is advisable to free it from foreign objects and cover it with oilcloth. Additionally, you need a work board. A piece of thick cardboard covered with a sheet of baking foil on top is best suited for this purpose. When firing, the finished products are placed in the oven without being separated from the foil.

You need to put 2 glasses on the table: 1 with water and 1 with vegetable oil.

In addition, you will need: a small rag, a watercolor brush, a sharp knife, a sharpened pencil, an awl or a thick needle, a rolling pin (you can replace it with a smooth bottle), a cap from a felt-tip pen or ballpoint pen, aluminum foil (for baking or from chocolates) and, of course, salt dough.

The surface of the dough dries very quickly in air. Therefore, on the workbench the dough should be in tightly closed yogurt or mayonnaise jars. Each time, take as much dough from there as you need, and immediately fold the excess back.

LET'S GET TO WORK

Many seemingly complex products consist of simple elements. Therefore, before attempting anything complicated, let’s learn how to create balls, sausages, flatbreads, etc.
To make a ball, take a piece of dough and roll it between your palms in a circular motion.
If you flatten the ball, you get a flat cake. Sometimes it is convenient to do this directly on the product.
A drop is also obtained from a ball. Pinch the ball at one end and pull. Then, as you turn the ball, continue to pull out the spout.
To make the sausage, roll a piece of dough between your palms in a back and forth motion.
If, while rolling a sausage, you press on one of its ends more than the other, you will get a carrot-cone.
If you roll the sausage with a pencil, you get a ribbon. Please note that to prevent the dough from sticking, both the pencil and the work board on which you roll out the tape should be slightly moistened with vegetable oil. The ribbon can be made in another way - flatten the sausage in your fingers or directly on the product.
Rolling a piece of dough on a board with a rolling pin will create a plate. Both the rolling pin and the board should be greased with vegetable oil. Do this with a cloth that is on your desktop.
You can cut shapes with straight sides, such as triangles or squares, from the plates. This is done with a sharp knife lubricated with oil. Move the knife slowly and smoothly so that cracks do not form at the edges of the cut.
You can imprint various objects on the surface of the dough, for example, beautiful embossed buttons, shells, the end of an empty ballpoint pen or another tube, a needle, a screwdriver, etc.
This must be done immediately after modeling, otherwise the dough will become crusty and you will get unsightly breaks instead of prints.
Prints of textured fabrics, such as guipure, look very impressive.
Before printing, lightly moisten fabrics and objects with vegetable oil to prevent them from sticking to the dough.
Using a knife, make straight lines on the dough and mark the toes, hands and paws.
With a sharply sharpened pencil they imprint the eyes, and with a pen cap applied at an angle, they imprint a smile.
You can also make a smile using a teaspoon.
Beautiful buttons, as well as beads, bugles, pieces of glass, pebbles, chains, threads, shreds and lace can not only be imprinted on the dough, but also “stamped” into the dough. It is advisable that the beads be glass, not plastic, and the threads not synthetic, otherwise you will not be able to burn your product in the oven.
Typically, salt dough elements stick well to each other. But sometimes (for example, when one of the elements has already dried), the joint must first be moistened with water using a soft brush. This must also be done if you want to add some details to an already fired product. By the way, you can repair broken products in the same way.

It is not necessary (and sometimes impossible) to make large products entirely from salt dough. In this case, you will need a frame. The frames can be balls or other shapes made of compressed foil or newspaper held together with tape, as well as a variety of boxes, jars and cups.

The frame may not be internal, but external, removable.

Elongated forms can be made without a frame, using double firing.

DRYING, FIRMING AND COLORING

To make dough products durable, they need to be dried or baked in the oven. Firing should be carried out at a not very high temperature, otherwise the products may burn, swell or change color. Firing time, depending on the thickness of the product, is 30-60 minutes. If you have an electric stove in your home, set it to the lowest heat setting. If the stove is gas, you will have to leave the door slightly open, securing it with some object, for example, a rolling pin.

If you do not have the opportunity to bake your product in the oven, be patient. On a radiator or in the sun, products (especially large ones) will dry no sooner than in a week.

After firing or drying, dough products can be painted and varnished. For coloring, you can use acrylic paints, but it is best to use artistic gouache with a little PVA glue added. After drying, this mixture is slightly shiny and does not stain your hands. For varnishing, use acrylic varnish. It is water soluble, non-toxic and dries in 6-8 hours.
